The sync settings you choose are unique to each computer unless you're syncing everything everywhere. Also, if you're choosing folders on two computers and you create a new folder on computer A that you want to sync to computer B, you'll need to go to computer B and select the new folder there.

This article describes how to download the OneDrive sync app and sign in with your personal account, or work or school account, to get started syncing. If you use Microsoft 365 Apps for business, you can also sync files from your SharePoint sites. If you're not using Microsoft 365 Apps for business, see Sync SharePoint files with the OneDrive for Business sync app (Groove.exe).

On the This is your OneDrive folder screen, select Next to accept the default folder location for your OneDrive files. If you want to change the folder location, select Change location - this is the best time to make this change.

Any time you want to change the folders you sync on your computer, right-click that cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, and select Settings > Account > Choose folders. Find other information about your account and change other OneDrive settings from here.

If the icon does not appear, you will need to trigger it manually from the OneDrive exe file. To do this, open File Explorer and click View > Hidden items, then drill down to the following location: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\. In that folder, double-click the OneDrive.exe file, and the icon will appear in the System Tray.

A window for Your OneDrive folder points to the default location for your local OneDrive folder. Click Change location to pick another destination or click Next. The folder will then be created if it does not already exist. If it does exist, click the Use this folder button.

Review the subsequent screens to complete the initial setup. At the end, you may be prompted to open your OneDrive folder, which you can do if you wish. The next steps will vary somewhat based on whether or not you are running the 22H2 update to Windows 11.

Your next task is to select the folders and files you wish to add to your OneDrive location in File Explorer. For example, if you use a folder called Word Documents for your Microsoft Word files, move that entire folder into OneDrive (so that typically would be C:\Users\[username]\OneDrive\Word Documents).

You then need to set up the folders you want to back up and sync to OneDrive. In Windows 10 and prior versions of Windows 11, click the OneDrive System Tray icon, select Help & Settings > Settings, then choose the Account tab and Choose folders. Here you can see all the files and folders stored in your OneDrive folder.

If you wish to sync everything stored in your OneDrive folder, click the checkbox for Make all files available (Sync all files and folders in OneDrive in Windows 11 22H2).

Otherwise, check the individual folders you wish to sync and uncheck any folders you do not want synced. Any folders you leave unchecked will remain on OneDrive but will be removed from your current PC.

After OneDrive is up and running, you can use it to back up important folders. In Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows 11, open the OneDrive settings menu and click the Backup tab. You can opt to back up your desktop, pictures folder, and documents folder. Check the items you wish to back up and click Start backup.

Want to view your OneDrive files? You can see your locally saved folder and files if you right-click on the OneDrive System Tray icon and select Open folder. This will open a windows in File Explorer that shows all the OneDrive folders and files that are saved directly on your computer.

To see your online files, select View online instead and sign in with your Microsoft account. Up pops a page displaying the files and folders contained in your online OneDrive space.

Set up the Personal Vault by right-clicking the OneDrive System Tray icon and selecting View online. Sign in to OneDrive, then double-click the Personal Vault folder under My Files. You will be asked to authenticate this access via your security key or authenticator app. Now move your folders and files to the Personal Vault area.

If you want to remove a PC from OneDrive, first you may want to ensure that all the files you need are synced. Once all your files are backed up to your PC, open OneDrive settings and click Account > Unlink this PC. At the prompt, click the Unlink account button, and now your PC will no longer sync with OneDrive.

I recently downloaded a very large amount of images for a Machine Learning project. OneDrive is going a little bit crazy about it and I would like it to "ignore" the folder. Ideally, the folder would be isolated from the rest of the synced folders from OneDrive perspective, but in the same directory on my computer.

I tried to navigate through OneDrive > Settings > Account > Choose folders, but as soon as I uncheck the folder, OneDrive says "If you confirm, the folder won't be available anymore on your computer, but only online" which is exactly what I wan't to avoid ...

N.B : I saw this post How to exclude a specific file or directory from OneDrive within the OneDrive folder structure but the solution doesn't work for folder (and I can't just specify the 200k files that i want to be isolated)

Here is a similar thread "Registry exclude folder for OneDrive", on thread "Reassess the possibility to ignore or exclude selected OneDrive folders and files from the sync process." on UserVoice forum, the OneDrive PM Manager said they are are looking to expanding such feature to folders in the future.

I suggest you go to OneDrive folder, then copy the specific folder to other location that won't be synced to OneDrive, then navigate through OneDrive > Settings > Account > Choose folders agian, then unsynchronize this folder.

Hi guys.

I have been using Dropbox for many years but my company started using OneDrive.

But, I would like to keep all documents in Dropbox to keep everything centralized and just one app on the phone. I've tried to direct OneDrive to a folder inside Dropbox but it turns out that there is always a file that Dropbox can't sync because it's always in use by OneDrive so Dropbox can't sync it. The file starts with ".849..." and it is a system and hidden file.

If by chance I stop the OneDrive service the file is synchronized but when I start again with OneDrive it gives me an error and I no longer have synchronization with OneDrive. I have already tried to ignore the synchronization file but without success with the command "Set-Content -Path 'D:\NunoViegas\Dropbox\OneDrive\Werfen\HLIT PT - General\.849C9593-D756-4E56-8D6E-42412F2A707B' -Stream com. dropbox.ignored -Value 1". Is not marking to ignore it.

Is there a way to skip this file? Or hidden and/or system files?

Has anyone tried this?

Thanks a lot.

Best regards

It's not recommended, at all, to place one service's sync folder inside that of another service. Conflicts like the one you're seeing are bound to happen, and such a configuration cannot be supported by Dropbox.

Install the OneDrive sync app for Windows. (For information on the builds that are being released, and on the download builds, see release notes.) Installing the sync app downloads the .adml and .admx files.

Browse to %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\\*BuildNumber*\adm\ (for per-machine sync app browse to %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft OneDrive\BuildNumber\adm\ or %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft OneDrive\BuildNumber\adm\ (depending on the OS architecture)) to the subfolder for your language, as necessary (where BuildNumber is the number displayed in sync app settings under the About tab).

Paste the .admx file in your domain's Central Store, \\\\*domain*\sysvol\domain\Policies\PolicyDefinitions (where domain is your domain name, such as corp.contoso.com), and the .adml file in the appropriate language subfolder, such as en-us. If the PolicyDefinitions folder doesn't exist, see How to create and manage the Central Store for Group Policy Administrative Templates in Windows, or use your local policy store under %windir%\policydefinitions.

(SharePointOnPremFrontDoorUrl) Specify SharePoint Server URL and organization name. This setting is for customers who have SharePoint Server 2019. For information about using the new OneDrive sync app with SharePoint Server 2019, see Configure syncing with the new OneDrive sync app.

(SharePointOnPremPrioritization) Specify the OneDrive location in a hybrid environment. This setting is for customers who have SharePoint Server 2019. For information about using the new OneDrive sync app with SharePoint Server 2019, see Configure syncing with the new OneDrive sync app.

This setting lets the OneDrive sync app remove all inherited permissions within read-only folders syncing on a user's PC. This removal of inherited permissions improves the performance of the sync app when syncing folders that the user has read-only permission to.

This setting lets you convert synced SharePoint files to online-only files when you enable OneDrive Files On-Demand. If you have many PCs syncing the same team site, enabling this setting helps you minimize network traffic and local storage usage.

If you enable this setting, files in currently syncing team sites are changed to online-only files, by default. Files later added or updated in the team site are also downloaded as online-only files. To use this setting, the computer must be running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) or later, and you must enable OneDrive Files On-Demand.This feature isn't enabled for on-premises SharePoint sites. 2351a5e196
