There is Alt+F4 and then Enter, but this only works from the desktop. I would like to do this from any 'position' or 'place' or within any program. If I were in an application and did this, I'd only close down that application.

My question is, is there a keyboard combination (which does not rely on creating scripting files and global shortcuts), to shutdown the PC in three or less keyboard keystrokes from any position/program. Also, is there a similarly short key sequence for restart?

I would like to grab the service name and the server it is on then from the email, then connect to the on premise server (through an on premise data gateway i assume) and perform a restart of the widget service.

The biggest challenge is probably routing it to the correct machine. Normally the desktop flow just uses the machine or a random machine of the machine group which was set in the connection of the Run a flow built with Power Automate for desktop action. However, you want to connect to a specific machine.

I can imagine it would be possible with one parent flow which routes to the correct child flows and in those child flows you can use the direct to machine connection. Haven't tried this myself though

I mistakenly thought the data gateway could be used as a gateway from the cloud to perform actions against resource on premise. Such as services, processes and such of an internal machine.

Am i understanding I would need to install desktop flow on every on premise server i want to perform actions against?

It depends a bit on the tasks. I was looking at the Windows Services action question. Those actions would be executed on the machine itself. In that case you want to register these individual machines, -us/power-automate/desktop-flows/manage-machines#register-a-new-machine

However, in your scenario you can probably also use (remote) PowerShell actions in a desktop flow on one server to restart things on other servers (if PowerShell remoting is enabled). In that case these kind of tasks can be executed from one machine. Again, thinking out loud, haven't tried it

So, the last option means the machine should be auto restarted after grace period right?

What I've seen is that from about 2000 machines, more or less 100 of them each month do not complete the update, because they miss the restart, staying in pending. So I need to find out any way to be able to force the restart to be sure the patch was deployed.

If a user is logged in, you will probably see an error indicating "The system shutdown cannot be initiated because there are other users logged on to the computer.". Otherwise, the endpoint will restart.

Hi there. I have a few Windows 10 PCs configured in Windows Update to restart as soon as updates are complete.

If I install updates by (manually) going to Windows Updates and check for updates, the updates are found and installation begins.

However, Windows Updates prompts to restart the computer before all updates have finished installing.

So for example, in the picture I've attached here, Windows Updates is 40% through installing the May 2021 cumulative update.

The blue pop-up window appears (as well as the Windows Update restart icon in the taskbar) telling you it's time to restart Windows.

When I click to restart, I (briefly) see in the background that Windows hadn't actually finished installing all updates.

Sure enough, after Windows reboots, when I go back to WU and check "View Update History" I see the May 2021 updates is not listed, so I have to start all over again.

Thanks for getting back to me. That makes sense. I get that some updates would depend on other updates already being installed.

But in this case I had other machines configured the same way, where I didn't restart the PC immediately.

I ignored the prompt to reboot for a few minutes and let the install continue.

On those PCs, the 2021-05 update completed installation and then I rebooted, so it doesn't seem the reboot halfway through was necessary.

You are right, whether you need to restart depends on your choice, while the prompt to reboot is by design.

After the reboot, an early upgrade task checks if core components like the registry itself have been updated and moves the new files into place if so, then begins the normal upgrade process for registered desktop components that begins by unregistering the old version, moving the new file in place of the old, and registering the new version. Once that is complete, the system boots normally, using the new versions.

When windows updates, it first downloading files from whatever storage of MS there is.

Then it start to look thought packages your system already has and downloaded.

After this there is a dependency mechanism on what package need what actions to be performed: for example you have packages downloaded.

The system during update can for example check that package "pack2" needs reboot and be installed only after "pack1" should be installed onto system, because of this it will need a complete system reboot.
