High Rates of Unemployment
The Central Statistical Office (CSO) of Zambia reports that 16 percent of the 4.9 million people who are eligible to work are unemployed for the 2009–2010 season. In general, 74% of women and 86% of men over the age of 15 do not have a job.
In light of these stark facts, how can you take use of your professional standing to land a position that fulfills your goals?
APPLICATION PROCESS
• Send a formal cover letter using letterhead that is styled and typeset in the same way as your resume. This is suitable unless otherwise noted. You now have to wait a few days to find out if they will get back to you. Don't forget to provide your contact information. • If the contact name is not mentioned in the advertisement, call the agency or company to make sure your application gets to the proper person.
• Keep your resume concise and easy to read, with your skills and talents listed on the first page.
• Tailor your cover letter to the job posting, highlighting your qualifications that align with the requirements.
• Give the recruiter a call a few days later to see if they have received your application.
Having a positive attitude goes a long way toward coming off as approachable and engaged. When you smile, you can actually hear it in the other person's voice when you are on the phone.

Here are some pointers:
• Search the internet, databases, journals, newspapers, and webpages for adverts.
• Look for internal (intranet) posts and corporate magazines or newspapers through your network of friends and acquaintances.
• Engage in conversation and attentive listening at all get-togethers and social events. Investigate whether there are any employment openings that others may be aware of.
• Speak with a legitimate, experienced staffing company. Make sure it makes sense to send them your resume by giving them a call beforehand. This is also the time for you to inquire about any current openings that would be ideal for you.
• Avoid shyness. Find out whether there are any openings at the organization you'd like to work for by giving them a call. Whether at all possible, ask to talk with the director or the human resources manager. Find out the qualifications that they are seeking. Ask them about their qualifications and experience, even if there aren't any openings available in your field or with your background would search for if your ideal job became available.
