Canvas supports tools for media creation in course content. This document is intended to show the pros and cons for media content in Canvas, Studio, and mobile products. Some media types are not saved for reuse, so you may need to consider a different method depending on the media type.

Canvas is a cloud-native learning platform and learning management system that provides several options for creating new media and uploading existing media. The following tables show each location that accepts media in Canvas while using a web browser and details about the media features.

Mobile devices provide several options for creating new media and uploading existing media in Canvas Student and Canvas Teacher mobile apps. However, depending on the app and device, users may experience limitations with media creation.

Mobile media recording lengths are dependent on internet connections, cellular network speeds, and the number of apps in use on a device. The maximum recording time is approximately 10 minutes, but may vary. Upload failures display an error. To ensure video recordings upload to the app, you may want to record in a separate application and upload the file to the app.

If a file fails to upload, the notification drawer will display an error message. Additionally, if the user has remained on the media upload screen, the Canvas apps will display a toast notification upon failure.

Mobile devices provide several options for creating new media and uploading existing media in Canvas mobile apps. The following tables show each location that accepts media in the Canvas Student app and Canvas Teacher app and details about the media features.

Embedding Media in Canvas allows instructors to place media content in places like Canvas Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes, and Announcements. This allows the media content to be more than a watch-only experience. Students can watch a video and have access to other information such as text, files, reflection questions, etc. Also, embedding media allows instructors to organize the media in the desired place in the course. Access can be restricted to keep students from seeing the video until a certain date/time or until certain tasks have been completed. Embedding can also allow students to download videos if instructors choose that option.

Media maybe added to a Canvas in several ways, depending on the source and how you want it displayed. When sharing media from Kaltura Media Space you must publish that file to unlisted rather than private.

While Media Library content is available to students through the Media Library section of a Canvas course, instructors can embed Media Library content into Canvas Pages (or anywhere there is a Rich Content Editor). Embedding media content cal allow students to view and access the materials with additional context provided through extended descriptions on a page. It also allows instructors more control of presenting and sequencing of these materials in the course schedule. This article will go over how to embed Media Library content into Canvas pages.

You can toggle to the "Upload" tab of the pop-up to directly upload media files to the Media Library course folder for embedding, or the "Record" tab to open Panopto Capture or the Panopto Recorder to record new media for embedding.

Media Gallery is a dedicated place in a Canvas course site to display media content to everyone enrolled in a Canvas course site. By default, both instructors and students can add their selected My Media content to the Media Gallery. If faculty have media assignments in Canvas, they should consider disabling the Media Gallery or enabling the Moderate Content option for Media Gallery to prevent students from accidentally submitting work to the Media Gallery instead of the Canvas media assignment. We recommend that faculty embed media into Canvas content (see Embedding Media section below) to help students know when it is appropriate to watch a specific video in the context of the course, but the Media Gallery can provide a convenient one-stop location for course videos. Both embedded media and media in the Media Gallery provide in-depth analytics on your media content pertaining to who has watched your media and how much of your media they have watched.

The Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE) has a small "Embed My Media" filmstrip button that allows users to embed media directly into Canvas content. This button is directly linked to your My Media collection and appears on any content creation page in Canvas, including assignments, discussions, pages, quizzes, discussion posts, text entry assignment submissions, and quiz essay questions. We recommend creating and uploading your media to My Media before using the RCE "Embed My Media" button.

Instructors may also use a web camera to attach video or audio comments to Comments in SpeedGrader or to Messages in the Canvas Inbox. However, media files created with these tools are not added to your My Media collection and will not be available to students or instructors once the course is over.

I'm a gardener so any chance that I get to play with a collection that is all about flowers, I am definitely going to take advantage of the opportunity!

Every month Prima Marketing does a color challenge and this month was all about lavender. I knew the perfect collection to use for this challenge was the Watercolor Floral collection. I absolutely adore this collection!

I also incorporated some Finnabair mediums as well as elements from Tim Holtz, Reneabouquets, Pinkfresh Studio and Scrapbook.com.

I started by painting an 8x8 inch canvas with Lavender Impasto paint from Finnabair. Once the impasto was dry, I used the new Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous floral outlines stamp to add texture to the canvas. To help me stamp on the canvas, I placed a small lidded container under the canvas so the surface was sturdy. I also used a static pad on the canvas before stamping my images. I then stamped the images using clear embossing ink then embossed the images using Ranger's Super Fine white embossing powder. I then painted, stamped and embossed a small wooden butterfly piece.

Next I used Distress Oxide Spray in Seedless Preserves to add a bit of watercolor to the stamped images. I began by watering a little bit down in a palette, blotting the excess off. I layered on color by using more and more concentrated versions of the oxide spray and blotting less. To add a little shimmer to the canvas and wood piece, I watered down a bit of Opal Magic paint in my palette and painted the leaves of the stamped images. I then splattered my canvas with the same Opal Magic paint and also watered down Pops of Color in Soft Lilac.

While the canvas dried, I fussy cut a whole bunch of elements from Prima's Watercolor Floral collection and picked out some pieces of pre-cut ephemera. I then used a shaping tool to add a little more dimension to my ephemera pieces.

Once my canvas was all dry, I began layering on my elements, using a variety of adhesives. I started by placing some paper flowers onto the canvas using heavy body gel followed by the wooden butterfly piece that I attached with a small dab of hot glue to the flower directly under the center of it and Smart Glue where it touched the edges of other flowers.

I added some Reneabouquets lace to the left side of the canvas with a small dab of heavy body gel then popping a paper flower over the top edge of the lace with more of the same medium. Next I used Distress Collage Medium Matte to attach the ephemera to some of the paper flowers to "float" the ephemera over the canvas and flowers. I also used a small bit of foam adhesive to attach the large purple flower ephemera to the edge of the wooden butterfly. I also added a fussy cut sentiment to the upper left of the canvas with foam adhesive.

I tucked leaves in using Distress Collage Medium Matte the added another small flower and leaf ephemera to the top of the wooden butterfly. To finish it all off, I added a Reneabouquets butterfly using a bit more foam adhesive and used Glossy Accents to add a few Pinkfresh jewels.
