PhET simulations provide fun, interactive research-based simulations for use in K-12 and college STEM education. To help students visually comprehend concepts, PhET simulations animate what is invisible to the eye through the use of graphics and intuitive controls such as click-and-drag manipulations, sliders and radio buttons. In order to further encourage quantitative exploration, the simulations also offer measurement instruments including rulers, stop watches, voltmeters, and thermometers. The study investigated the impact of PhET simulation-based learning on students' motivation and academic achievement in learning oscillations and waves among Malawian secondary students. The following research questions guided the study: (i) What were students' motivation and academic achievement levels at the beginning of the study in oscillation and waves? (ii) To what levels do PhET interactive simulation-based learning impact students' motivation and achievement in oscillations and waves? (iii) Is the change in post-test scores due to the students' characteristics in non-randomized settings or the PhET interactive simulation-based learning? A sample of 280 (44.6% females) form three secondary school students with a mean age of 17.5 (SD = 1.424) from four schools in Blantyre urban district in Malawi was used in a quasi-experimental design of non-equivalent groups. The experimental group was exposed to PhET simulation-based learning, while the conventional teaching methods were used in the control group. Pre- and post-tests were used to collect data on academic achievement, and questionnaires collected data on motivation. Independent samples t-test showed a statistical difference between the two groups on post-test of the academic achievement. Results from linear regression indicated that the differences between the two groups in the post-test were not due to students' characteristics but rather the intervention with p < 0.01. The ANCOVA test on motivation constructs showed a significant difference with a small effect size between the study groups on self-efficacy, active learning strategies, performance goals, achievement goals, learning environment stimulation, and attitudes towards learning with computer learning. The results from the study suggest that PhET simulation-based learning improved the learning of oscillations and waves. PhET simulation-based learning provides visualizations and teaching aids that help easily understand content knowledge, hence improving students' academic achievement and motivation levels.

While students can interact with the simulations on their own computers in a class or lab environment, there are also several ways to encourage inquiry when the teacher is the one controlling the simulation.

PhET simulations allows you to change variables and discover cause-and-effect relationships, promoting the development of scientific inquiry skills. Even in a classroom where the instructor is the only person controlling the simulation, some of the power of this scientific inquiry can be captured during whole-class discussions (Moore et al. 2014). We call this kind of discussion "whole class inquiry," because the whole class can engage with testing cause-and-effect relationships as if they were one large lab group.

Another way to ask students to think about what is happening in the simulation is through clicker questions and peer instruction (Keller et al. 2006; Moore, Herzog, and Perkins 2013; Moore et al. 2014). Clicker questions are multiple-choice questions, designed to give students an opportunity to discuss and make sense of concepts related to the simulation. Students think about the question on their own, and vote, and then discuss with their neighbors to explain and understand each others' reasoning. After a final vote, the instructor holds a whole-class discussion about the question and the reasons behind the answers. In general, clicker questions should be stimulating and challenging, rather than simply asking students to recall something that has already been explained. Below are several types of questions that have been successful when paired with PhET simulations: Prediction, open-ended prediction, contrasting cases, and interpreting representations.

Because PhET simulations are designed to help students explore cause-and-effect relationships, it can be useful to ask students to predict what will happen when a variable or parameter is changed. Then you can use the simulation as an experiment to test their prediction.

Some ILDs ask students to sketch or graph their predictions. For example, using the Moving Man simulation, you can have students sketch their predictions for the position versus time graph in a particular scenario, first on their own, and then discussing with their neighbors:

Then the instructor can conduct the demonstration with the simulation, and hold a whole-class discussion about the results. The discussion can be extended by choosing to show the velocity vector along with the graph, to help make the connection between movement in the x-direction, and the graph of velocity versus time.
