Is there a good method for fixing detailed pencil work and then applying light watercolor/gouache washes over it without actually washing away the drawing? I really want my detailed line work to show through but so far, the results have been muddled and faded pencil under my gouache and watercolor. Is there some medium that will solve my problems? I have tried Krylon Workable Fixatif over the drawing, but that seems to deter the water and paint and it dries splotchy.

I do my drawing on cardboard, then trace it onto tracing paper. I transfer my drawing to my watercolor paper using architects transfer paper which is like graphite paper but is not as dirty. I than have a good solid drawing which may or may not be seen in the finished painting depending on how transparent my finished painting is. I have used this system for years, sometimes using graphite if I want fainter lines. I rarely if ever draw on my watercolour paper.

Here are a couple more important points to keep in mind. If you, like me, blend your pencil pigment with a solvent like Gamsol, make sure not to mix the colors together. I used a dabbing motion with my brush during this step to dissolve the pigment without blending the colors together.

I draw something with a pencil, achieve what I think is an acceptable result. Now I want to make it permanent, so I draw over it with ink (a 0.5 copic multiliner). The problem is, my drawing sucks now. I can't really explain it, but you know how if you just put your hand on the paper and draw a line around it, the drawing doesn't really look like a hand? It's sort of like that. Maybe it's because the pencil drawing has some detail (e.g. varying line width) that gets lost when drawn over with ink? Whatever it is, clearly I must be doing something wrong, so what are some proper techniques for inking?

I recently did this piece of concept art in pencil, and needless to say, the "blank" areas are pretty dirty and marked up. Does anyone know of a way I could clean this up in Photoshop? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I like the plane's top blending into the sky.

What I usually struggle with it pencil stroke thickness. I noticed you used thick strokes for the shadows, but a soft blend on the plane itself. Is it a coincidence or intended effect, to give the direction of the ground surface?

Apple Pencil support is also essential for me when working with Obsidian on iPad. Basically all my productivity tools from classic apps like the Office suite to pure web apps I use support the Apple Pencil and drawing even in the browser.

For Obsidian to get Apple Pencil support would be one of the greatest addition in terms of productivity that I could currently wish for.

Just a question I want to make pencil drawing, using in the colors gray to black the shades, or reciprocity.

for if I use the colors and draw several times on top of each other I can not control it, and do not look good

Besides using a grid, what do you use when painting with acrylic paint? I have a pencil drawing in a sketchbook that I would like to transfer and not have in reverse, nor do I want to use vine charcoal. Any suggestions are so very welcome!! Thanks.

I use graphite to transfer a sketch for my acrylic paintings. First I scan my sketch, then print it out. Then get a graphite stick and go all over the back of my printed sketch. For tracing, I use colored pencil to delineate it. I keep the printed out sketches, and if I want to do a different version of them, or if I need to redo the same painting, I go over it with a different color.

Here's a better way to make a pencil drawing from a photo. Download the G'MIC plugin for the GIMP. Go to Filters -> G'MIC. In the list of filters, open up the "Black & White" section. In there, click on "Pencil portrait". Click OK. Wait a while as this can be CPU intensive, but the results are worth it. I've attached an image with the default parameters.

i had almost finished it.. I wanted to make a pencil draw effect.. this tutorial was nice.. And by viewing this article, i went to do that exactly with the same pic.. But, as i am new to GIMP, i cant get the last part.. "On my image I have applied a layer mask over the line drawing so there is a transition between photo and line drawing."

in the layers dialogue right click on the layer that has the line drawing: "Add layer mask" (select white in the popup dialog). there will now be a new layer right beside the layer now in the layers dialogue. it will be fully white. click it to activate it. this is the so called mask -> you can only draw black and white and gray tones. then take the gradient tool, set FG and BG color to black and white and drag a gradient from (i.e.) left to right. then the part that is black on the layer mask becomes (semi)transparent.

I am an absolute beginner but desperately need to be able to do this exact thing for an important project. I've downloaded the progam and followed each step, but each time I try, at Step 4 it all goes to pot. How do I set value 4 to the selective gaussian blur? I've tried dozens of times - I can even get all the way to setting the duplicated merged layer to 'dodge' but what I end up with looks nothing like a pencil drawing! It's getting close to 'banging head on the desk' time so can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Another common mistake is using a rectangular reference photo with a horizontal configuration and turning the drawing paper vertically. This will cause the drawing to be way too wide and not fit into the quadrants correctly. Fortunately, this error is usually seen with the placement of the first few lines, and easily corrected with a turn of the paper.

Once students are successful with the Quadrant Method, I move through the Shape Method of Drawing , Negative Space, then we explore visually communicating Form through the use of Value with graphite pencil.

Later in the semester, when I got to my pencil drawing Value Unit, I thought I would revisit the shoes. I put the kids in groups of 4 and they took close up photos of the piles of shoes. I even told them a day ahead about the photo shoot so they could wear their most interesting pair.

In between the Quadrant Method and this Shoe Frenzy lesson, students have learned how to build an object with shapes, how to build an object using only Negative Space, and how to create a form out of a shape by adding Value. The foundation has been set for a challenging realistic drawing that requires strict observation, sound skills, and rock solid confidence.

I stand up in front with a piece of 10 x 12 inch drawing paper and I explain that we will be doing this together. Everyone gets their paper, their pencil, their ruler and we go through these steps:

Scaffolding skills works. I have seen the success for all students over the past 13 years, and it is the real deal. For more info on the details of the scaffold, check out the other blog posts on this page, there are a few that speak to scaffolding for both drawing and painting for all skill levels.

The 9000s are smart hexagonal pencil, in gold and cream on a dark green casing. My favourite fact about them is that their colour scheme was chosen by Count Alexander von Faber-Castell to match his military uniform! They are light to hold and have their grade printed clearly on every other facet so that they are easy to identify. You can buy a version of the HB and B grades with these soft little erasers on top.

Lumograph pencils never scratch or feel gritty and as they rise up the scale the shades become darker in a most reliable and uniform manner. They have the widest range of grades of all of the pencils and go all the way up to a very black 12B, although grades above a 9B can be hard to source in the UK. The Hamilton Pen company carries all of the grades. With such a wide tonal range you are really covered whether you like to draw more lightly or more darkly. If you like to blend your pencils, you will find that they smudge fairly well.

The grades become darker very rapidly as they rise up through the grading scale, and they end up even darker than the Staedtlers in the softer B grades. Therefore you get quite an extreme degree of tonal gradation between the lightest and darkest pencils. My only complaint was a slight lack of consistency rising up through the grades. Whilst the lighter grades had felt very hard (maybe a bit too hard) there seemed to be a rather abrupt jump between the 2B and 3B grades where the consistency changed noticeably and the pencils suddenly became much smoother.

Grafwoods have one brilliant innovation which is that the casings are colour coded, so you can identify the grade of the pencil visually without reading the written grade indicator. The colours start from a pure white casing for the 4H grade, and then get progressively more grey towards the silvery HB. They then continue to darken through the B grades until they reach the carbon-coloured 9B casing.

Cont  Paris is another illustrious pencil company and its founder Nicolas-Jacques Cont made a huge historical contribution to the development of the modern pencil when he patented his graphite and clay kiln-fired pencil in 1795. Although Cont are well known and popular in the UK their graphite drawing pencil range is not widely sold which surprises me because it really is very good. The pencils are fairly expensive here if bought individually and are better value when purchased in a tin, where because because the range of grades (only 3H to 6B) is so small you receive several duplicates.

What I have done, however, is made my own 'sketchy' objects just for wireframing. The process was essentially drawing a few UI Primitives (boxes, buttons, etc.) then converting the outlines to shapes, adding extra nodes along each path, then tweaking the position and angle of the nodes to create the 'wiggles'.

I have been using my ipad pencil to take notes in GoodNotes. At times when I am writing, a long line will appear. I have to erase that and start again and then it happens again. I tested with Notability and get the stray marks there. e24fc04721
