I am working on an iPhone application where I need the user's phone number. From what I've read (here for instance - Programmatically get own phone number in iOS), the device's phone number is not available within your application's container. I've always had the user enter his or her own number. But when I joined GroupMe the other day, after clicking the Get Started button, my phone opened up a drafted text message to some US area code number "Send this text to verify your phone number(b2bd308eb7)" After I sent the text, the app knew my number....how does one implement a system like this?

I am trying to see if she can get groupme notifications on her own number on the apple watch. I tried to use "wrist me" app but it won't download to her watch b/c it requires iphone. I have groupme on my phone so I tried to just log in as her on my phone but I realized that you can't turn on notifications on the untethered watch - there is no option to do this.

The GroupMe app is a messaging app owned by Microsoft. Users sign up with their Facebook, Microsoft/Skype, phone number, or email address, and are then able to send private or group messages to other users. It works across platforms; all you need is a device (iPhone, Android, computer, tablet) and Wi-Fi or data to get connected.

GroupMe works by downloading the app or accessing the service online, and then forming an account by providing your name, cell phone number and a password, or connecting through a Facebook or Twitter account.[13] The service then syncs with your contacts and from that point forward the user can make groups, limited to 5000 members. An individual who is part of an active group has the ability to turn off notifications for the app; users will still receive the message, but will not be notified about it. Each group is given a label and assigned a unique number. Some of the features of the app include the ability to share photos, videos, locations, create events, and emojis from various packs.

After you download GroupMe, sign up for an account with your Facebook log-in or use a email and password. Next, you'll need to enter your phone number, and then verify the number to complete the setup process. The app will send a text with a code to the number you provide and you'll need to enter that code back into the app.

GroupMe asks for your phone number so it can verify your identity and help you find other friends who use the app. Using your phone number, GroupMe can also send you SMS messages from your groups if you don't want to, or can't use the app. In order to do that, you can either turn it on in the settings menu of the app, or head to GroupMe's website and turn on SMS messaging. Then, you'll get text messages of all the activity in each of your groups and you can text to reply.

After you set up your account, you can choose to have the app scan your phone's address book to see if any of your contacts are already using GroupMe. You can also manually invite friends from your address book to sign up for the service.

GroupMe has a unique feature that lets you send messages to your friends who don't already have a GroupMe account by sending a message to their email address or phone number -- but the experience isn't that great. If you use someone's email address, your friend will get an email instructing him or her to download the app to join the conversation. Use friends' phone numbers, and they'll get a text every time you send a message, but they'll be prompted to install the app. They'll able to see photos and GIFs you send them, but not emoji.

First, you can share photos from your phone in GroupMe. In any open chat, tap the paper clip attachment icon next to the text field. You'll see a menu where you can launch your camera or pick from recent images take with your phone. In this menu, you can also share your location.

Another addition in version 5.0, you can also images you send by adding a text overlay to turn them into memes. To do that, either pick an image from your phone, or search for one in the media search menu. Once you select an image, tap the "Meme" button at the top of the photo. There you can add a text overlay, in all caps, to the top and/or bottom of the image, and send it to your friends to (hopefully) incite some laughter.

GroupMe is a totally free application, that lets you communicate easily through text messages with any friend, regardless of the type of device or cell phone that they have. In fact, the application even works with tablets, since it uses your data connection (or WiFi) to send and receive all messages.

One of the interesting concepts of the application is that whenever the internet connection isn't very good, it can start receiving messages using the SMS system of your phone, so that you don't lose even a single message.

GroupMe lets you chat with everyone via push or SMS. Add anyone to a group via her phone number or email address and start chatting over SMS immediately. Choose when and what type of notifications you receive. Mute specific chats or the entire app. GroupMe is part of Skype. Price: Free.

A recently discovered bug in Apple's iOS system causes apps, and sometimes entire phones, to crash when receiving a specific character in a message. At the University of Georgia, a student sent out this bug in class's GroupMe group message.

In most cases, the character crashes the specific app trying to display it. Some tech blogs, however, have reported the character crashing the entire phone if displayed in a notification, requiring the phone to be manually reset.

The Red & Black was able to twice recreate the crash by sending and receiving an email with the character in the default Mail app on multiple iPhones. In both cases the Mail app crashed, though the phone itself did not crash.

Some students affected by the GroupMe message reported experiencing their phones shutting on and off multiple times, while others reportedly lost messages, photos and other files when having to reset their devices.

This has been a constant irritant for me and want to know if there is any change from two+ years ago when I commented on it. I have a Versa 1 and use the GroupMe app on an android phone. I do receive messages on my Versa when someone posts in one of my GroupMe groups. However, it never tells who the GroupMe message is from, so I have to check my phone to find out. Other kinds of notifications, i.e. texts and emails, do tell the sender's name. Is there any fix for this?

There are those occasions when you need to get a text to a group of people and although some phones and operating systems allow this action, not everyone knows how to do this. There are those occasions I need to send a text to a group of people and with a simple app I am able to do so.

Groupme is a free app where you set up groups and each group is assigned a phone number. Once the group is set any text sent using this phone number goes to the whole group. It has become a great tool for collarobation and communication.

We first introduced GroupMe in our MakeUseOf Directory of cool websites and tools. Steve then featured it in his roundup of fun phone apps that can absolutely change the way you send text messages. Not only is GroupMe quite a lot of fun, it also works for almost everyone, not just those that own smartphones.

If interested, you will need the GroupMe app and to get me your phone number. Email me your phone number at peregrine43@hotmail.com.

There are at least two Cape May bird groups, one using WhatsApp and one using GroupMe, contact CMBO for details. Groups for northern NJ, Somerset/Morris, South Jersey birders, and SW Jersey birders also exist. As far as I know, Peregrine is the only one for NJ statewide, and I ask that other list owners and participants cross post rarities of statewide interest to Peregrine.

As our final project in COM 435, Communication and Emerging Technologies, we were asked to create a step-by-step blog/ tutorial explaining how to use a new social media. I will be explaining how to use GroupMe, a social media program that allows people to have group conversations. These conversations are accessible through texts (on both smartphones and easy use phones), and can also be accessed on the GroupMe webpage or GroupMe app. This media is ideal for event planning, team projects, work partnerships, and for organizing family/friend group events. For this project I will be focusing on how to create a GroupMe account and how to get started with the program on your computer.

The next step before your account is open is to add your phone number. In doing so you will enable GroupMe to access you through texts /SMS. This will enable your team members to keep in contact with you, something that will be discussed in more detail later.

*** These texts/photos will also be seen on your connected phone, allowing you to be active, or on the go while keeping in touch with your team. This is ideal for jobs that require participation outside of the office.

Congratulations! You have officially created your very own GroupMe account and group! Feel free to explore the program even more by returning to the main page (www.groupme.com) in order to download the app for your phone.

GroupMe has an app for every major platform: iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. Even if someone with an old-school flip phone can use the service just by texting the group number GroupMe sets up for you. ff782bc1db
