From there, Facebook spread across the world, becoming not only an incredibly valuable company but also one of the most important institutions of the early 21st century. The go-to social media site for a generation of internet users (and one which was readily adopted by older users as it transformed from exclusive to universal), Facebook was one of the major forces that brought the internet into the highly-participatory phase full of user-generated content sometimes referred to as "Web 2.0." It has also remained controversial. In addition to allowing misinformation and fake accounts to proliferate, Facebook has drawn criticism both for selling its users' data and for failing to adequately protect it. Nonetheless, Facebook continues to dominate the social media market, generating by far the most ad revenue and maintaining over half of the total market share.

The settlement stems from multiple lawsuits that were brought against Facebook by users who claimed that the company improperly shared their information with third-party sources such as advertisers and data brokers. The litigation began after Facebook was embroiled in a privacy scandal in 2018 with Cambridge Analytica, which scraped user data from the site as part of an effort to profile voters.

Facebook will take up to 90 days to delete all of your account data from its servers. For the first 30 days of that period, you can still sign in and cancel your deletion request. Your account will be restored and it'll be like you never left. For better or worse.

How many users does Facebook have? Check out these Facebook user statistics: As of the second quarter of 2018, Facebook boasted 2.23 billion monthly active users, with 68% of Americans using the social media platform. Though Americans heavily rely on the social media site, more than 85% of Facebook users come from outside the US and Canada.

Facebook, one of the biggest companies in the world, did not reach its 14th birthday unscathed. The company has faced more than its fair share of major social issues, from the dissemination of personal information to fake news.

A "face book" is a student directory featuring photos and basic information.[9] In 2003, there were no universal online facebooks at Harvard, with only paper sheets distributed[10] and private online directories.[11][12] Zuckerberg told the Crimson that "Everyone's been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard. ... I think it's kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week."[12] In January 2004, Zuckerberg began writing a code for a new website, known as "TheFacebook", with the inspiration coming from an editorial in the Crimson about Facemash, stating that "It is clear that the technology needed to create a centralized Website is readily available ... the benefits are many." Zuckerberg met with Harvard student Eduardo Saverin, and each of them agreed to invest $1,000 in the site.[13] On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched it under the name of "TheFacebook", originally located at thefacebook.com.[14]

The company dropped 'The' from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000.[23] The following year, the platform was made available for high school students, and in 2006, it became accessible to the general public.

In his book The Facebook Effect, David Kirkpatrick outlines the story of how Thiel came to make his investment: former Napster and Plaxo employee Sean Parker, who at the time had assumed the title of "President" of Facebook, was seeking investors for Facebook. Parker approached Reid Hoffman, the CEO of work-based social network LinkedIn. Hoffman liked Facebook but declined to be the lead investor because of the potential for conflict of interest with his duties as LinkedIn CEO. He redirected Parker to Peter Thiel, whom he knew from their PayPal days (both Hoffman and Thiel are considered members of the PayPal Mafia). Thiel met Parker and Mark Zuckerberg, the Harvard college student who had founded Facebook and controlled it. Thiel and Zuckerberg got along well and Thiel agreed to lead Facebook's seed round with $500,000 for 10.2% of the company. Hoffman and Mark Pincus also participated in the round, along with Maurice Werdegar who led the investment on behalf of Western Technology Investment. The investment was originally in the form of a convertible note, to be converted to equity if Facebook reached 1.5 million users by the end of 2004. Although Facebook narrowly missed the target, Thiel allowed the loan to be converted to equity anyway.[61] Thiel said of his investment:

On 22 May, regulators from Wall Street's Financial Industry Regulatory Authority announced that they had begun to investigate whether banks underwriting Facebook had improperly shared information only with select clients, rather than the general public. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin subpoenaed Morgan Stanley over the same issue.[117] The allegations sparked "fury" among some investors and led to the immediate filing of several lawsuits, one of them a class action suit claiming more than $2.5 billion in losses due to the IPO.[118] Bloomberg estimated that retail investors may have lost approximately $630 million on Facebook stock since its debut.[119]

In order to account for that, Instagram just recently released a new tool allowing Business and Creator accounts to schedule Reels, photos, and carousel posts as far as 75 days in advance directly from the Instagram app.

We have rolled out this new storage format to many 10s of petabytes of warehouse data at Facebook and have reclaimed 10s of petabytes of capacity by switching from RCFile to Facebook ORCFile as the storage format. We are in the process of rolling out the format to additional tables in our data warehouse, so we can take further advantage of the improved storage efficiency and read/write performance. We have made our storage format available at GitHub and are working with the open source community to incorporate these improvements back into the Apache Hive project.

We have many ideas on how to further improve compression and reader/writer performance in ORCFile. These ideas include supporting additional codecs such as LZ4HC, using different codecs and compression levels for different columns when encoded differently, storing additional statistics and exposing these to query engines, and pulling in work from open source such as predicate pushdown. We also have several other ideas to further improve storage efficiency for our warehouse. This includes eliminating logical redundancies across source and derived tables, sampling for cold data sets, and augmenting the Hive type system with additional commonly needed types that are currently stored as strings.

This information is the most helpful for brand new social media accounts that are working on building a following. Once you do have an audience, however, there are plenty of tools and services you can use to find out the best days and times to post for your own brand, which might be different.

To ensure a fair investigation of the facts, we have sought information and submissions from Facebook. We are disappointed that many of our questions have as yet gone unanswered or not answered to our satisfaction (i.e. they were incomplete, or otherwise deficient).

Sometimes a game console, mobile phone, or other device might ask for permission to share specific information with the game and applications you use on that device. If you say okay, those applications will not be able to access any other information about you without asking specific permission from you or your friends.

If you want to completely block applications from getting your information when your friends and others use them, you will need to turn off all Platform applications. This means that you will no longer be able to use any third-party Facebook-integrated games, applications or websites.

If an application asks permission from someone else to access your information, the application will be allowed to use that information only in connection with the person that gave the permission, and no one else.

5. Subject to certain restrictions, including on use and transfer, users give you their basic account information when they connect with your application. For all other data obtained through use of the Facebook API, you must obtain explicit consent from the user who provided the data to us [Facebook] before using it for any other purpose other than displaying it back to the user on your application.
