So yesterday I picked up a Dreamcast from a local pawn shop. I got 2 controllers, 2 memory cards (the ones with like 4 memory cards built into each one) and 6 games for $50. Both Sonic Adventure games were in the set so I was pretty happy with the deal.
To the point, I was thinking about hooking my Saturn up to the TV in my MAME cab to play Area 51 and the like with friends and get the "arcade feel" as much as possible. Now I'm thinking maybe the Dreamcast would be better. I saw House of the Dead and that made me think about using the Dreamcast.

the sega stunner for the saturn is a fantastic heavy plastic light gun. its the closest youre going to get to a real arcade light gun. US Dreamcasts can only use 3rd party light guns, and none of them are great. with an import system, you can use official sega dreamcast light guns, but they arent as good as saturn stunners.
Well, I can get Stunners for the Saturn on town from the local store. I think they are $15 each but I've spent more on less for sure. Maybe I'll get them anyway and hook them up or not from time to time.
I have to say I had hoped that there would be more gun games for the Dreamcast, but House of the Dead may have me sold anyway. Area 51 on the Saturn might be too tempting for me not to try it. I looked at some videos, and it isn't too far off but does it alway have the cross hairs on the screen or what? I never actually saw anyone playing it, just screen captures so I couldn't tell if they were playing with the gun or a controller.
I looked into the light guns on good ol' Amazon and the reviews for the Dreamcast are in fact scary. Seeing the quality of the Saturn light gun I thought for sure the Dreamcast would have something like that and I was dead wrong about that.
Hell, does the PS2 have better stuff for this? I don't have one right now but I can get one and I know there were a few gun games my brother had for the system. I never played any of them, but he seemed happy with them. I just want to be able to play a few of those games without too much trouble.
Thats the one I liked the look of much better and seemed like it would be easier to hold and use, but also the one that had the most negative reviews. I'll take your work for it and order a pair soon. Thanks for the information.
All this conflicting information and over all bad reviews from most people. What is a man to do? I know I love Sega, but they really screwed up toward the end with some of this stuff. I want a good gun to play House of the Dead with.
I have already contacted my friend that runs GameStop here, on the way home I'm stopping by to get the game and the gun things for the Wii controllers. He has them put aside for me already. It will get me by for now. If the Wii would just get more games like that it would be my favorite system. I need an Area 51/Area 51 Site 4 bundle for Wii, that would make me HAPPY!!!!
In all honesty, if you are serious about this, I may recommend slapping a PlayStation (or a PS2) in there. You have a much wider selection of light gun games to choose from, a lot of them being good, too.
The library is about equal, with HotD 2 being the scale tipper. I've *never* had problems with my lightguns. You shoot the corners of the screen and are all calibrated and good to go in under a minute, ready to blast zombie bastards in the face. I've used it on multiple TVs also. round front, flat front. They both worked great. 12 years of dreamcast light gun action, no problem!
Don't get me wrong, HotD 2 is pretty awesome.. It was my first Dreamcast game, actually, and I was absolutely floored by it when I got it (on launch day). The Virtua Cop games have more going on though and I find them to be more of a challenge to this day.
I do believe you have use different guns with the PS1. The PS2 though had one gun that was really good and worked with almost everything if I remember correctly. Do the PS1 titles work in a PS2 with the PS2 guns? 152ee80cbc
