Houston Interfaith for Middle East Peace (HIMEP) celebrates the religious and spiritual diversity of Texas’ largest multi-faith city, and we steadfastly organize for peace and justice, particularly in solidarity with faith communities who are targeted by local, state, and national forces.
On November 18, 2025, Texas governor Greg Abbott “designated” CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations) a “terrorist organization” (source). CAIR lives by their mission “to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims” (source). CAIR has responded to Governor Abbott’s accusations with a letter denying the governor’s claims as well as filing a lawsuit against Abbott on November 20.
CAIR works diligently and courageously through the US legal system against violence, intimidation, and harassment of American citizens. CAIR has made explicit statements against terrorism, especially against the terrorism being committed against Palestinians, both in the US and in the Middle East. The identified death toll of Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories since October 7, 2023 is reaching close to 70,000 people, most of whom are elderly, women and children, with weapons supplied by US tax-payer dollars (source).
A large number of Americans who oppose this genocide and terrorism committed against Palestinians are Muslim, and government agencies continue to terrorize American Muslim communities, including the harrassment and attempted deportation of students Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk. We support our Muslim siblings who are detained without legal charges; we support CAIR in their work for holding violators of US laws, and our foundational values of freedom and justice, to account.
We ask that the governor’s office rescind its denunciation of an organization that promotes American civil rights and justice. HIMEP stands with CAIR in upholding peace, integrity, and human rights, and we applaud them for their courage to call out crimes being committed by our government domestically and abroad. We ask all Texans of faith and those of no faith to stand at this critical moment for American values of equality, freedom, and human rights, and thereby to stand in solidarity with CAIR.
