There are many types of hot tub pumps. The following are pump specifications to be identified in order to find a match. The ones marked with an "*" are the essentials; the last 3 (4. 5. & 6.) may need to be modified on the pump prior to installation depending on your hot tub (The videos below will show you how):
Identifying Amperage (amps) and voltage *
Identifying the Frame Size *
Identifying Pump Union Thread Type and Size *
Wet-end direction (watch short video below)
Wet-end barb fitting (can be fitted with plugs or barbs)
Pump Cord and Plug (Keep your old pump cord!)
The specification label(see example below) on a pump can be helpful to I.D. things that cannot easily be measure without special tools. Pumps can have a few stickers on them; the one we are looking for usually have the Amps (Amperage), Volts (Voltage), Model, and some can even have the Frame, etc...
If your pump has 2 speeds there will be 2 numbers for amperage (ie. amps 12.7/3.4), the first represents the pump on high speed (12.7amps) and the other on low speed(3.4amp)
Useful tech tip: to read hidden specification labels: Use your phone's camera to reach back a snap a picture of the label.
Example of a pump sticker:
99% of hot tub pumps are either a 48 frame or 56 frame. They cannot normally be used interchangeably (See pictures below for the difference). A 56 frame = 4 1/8" (10.5CM) between bolt heads OR 48 frame = 3 5/8"(9.2cm) between bolt heads).
If you cannot see the through-bolt heads on the back of the dry-end, a plastic pump cover cap may need to be removed to expose the bolt heads. Do not measure the bolt heads diagonally but rather horizontally or vertically only.
Hot Tub pump plumbing connections can be confusing, mainly because they are described as being an imperial size (example: 2.0"), but not actually measuring 2" anywhere.
Below are two ways to identify sizing of your threads; by measuring the pump thread OR by measuring the plumbing union.
NOTE: We only carry Buttress Thread pumps. 99.9% of hot tub pumps found in Canada have these threads.
Thread sizing by measuring the pump thread Outside Diameter (O/D):
The outside diameter of the union attaching to the pump will be approx. to 2 1/2" (6.35cm)
The outside diameter of the union attaching to the pump will be approx. 3" (7.6cm)
The outside diameter of the union attaching to the pump will be approx. 3 5/8" (9.2cm)
Thread sizing by measuring the Outside Diameter of the plumbing union that attaches to the pump:
The outside diameter of the Union attaching to the pump will be very close to 2 3/4" (7cm)
The outside diameter of the Union attaching to the pump will be very close to 3 1/2" (8.9cm)
The outside diameter of the Union attaching to the pump will be very close to 4 1/8" (10.5cm)
4. Wet-end Direction
This can be changed by simply removing the 4 through-bolts on the back of the pump and twisting the wet end as needed.
5. Wet-end Barb Fitting
Your hot tub may have more than one pump and it's common to have a small hose go between pumps. These are held onto the pump with a barb fitting. A plug or barbs can be added to match what's needed.
Keep your old pump cord! Your new pump may not have the same plug. Please watch the following video to learn how to quickly change out the cord properly.
ALWAYS WORK ON THIS WITH THE POWER OFF.
