If you want a high-volume, long-term friction reducer that boosts fuel economy and horsepower for classic cars, choose Hot Shot's Secret FR3; if you need a concentrated, deep-cleaning treatment to free up stuck internal components like piston rings and cam phasers in older engines, choose ATS Chemical 505.
• The trade-off is that it is not a cleaning agent; the data explicitly warns against using it alongside deep-cleaning additives like Stiction Eliminator without prior engine flushing. This pick is for owners who want a steady maintenance additive to protect engine life and smooth out operation over thousands of miles.
• ATS Chemical 505: Its biggest strength is its targeted ability to address specific mechanical failures, such as sticking lifters, piston rings, and timing chain tensioners, while also helping to clean sludge and restore performance in high-mileage engines. This pick is for mechanics or enthusiasts dealing with an engine that has developed specific noise, compression issues, or sluggish performance due to internal sludge or stuck parts.
Hot Shot's Secret FR3 is built for the owner who views their vehicle, particularly a classic car, as a long-term investment requiring consistent protection. The core design philosophy here is prevention and optimization. By utilizing a 100% synthetic formula, this additive works to lower the coefficient of friction between moving metal parts. When I look at the specifications, the promise of up to a 5 percent increase in fuel economy stands out. For a classic car that might already struggle with mileage or lacks modern aerodynamic efficiency, reclaiming even a small percentage of power and fuel savings can make a noticeable difference in daily driving.
The product is engineered to handle both gasoline and diesel engines, offering versatility that appeals to collectors who might have mixed fleets. It functions effectively with both synthetic and conventional oils, meaning you do not need to overhaul your entire lubrication strategy to get results. One of the most compelling features for a classic car enthusiast is the claim regarding noise reduction. Old engines often develop lifter tick or valve noise as tolerances change over decades. FR3 is designed to diminish these sounds while simultaneously restoring lost compression, which suggests it helps seal the cylinder better rather than just masking the sound.

However, this product is not a cure-all for neglected engines. The instructions are clear: do not use FR3 in combination with other aftermarket additives like Stiction Eliminator. If your engine is heavily clogged with sludge or has severely stuck components, applying FR3 directly could be counterproductive because it is a friction reducer, not a solvent. You would need to use a dedicated cleaner first, flush the system, and then apply FR3 for protection. Therefore, this product is best suited for vehicles that are running reasonably well but need a boost in performance, smoother operation, and extended engine life through reduced wear.
ATS Chemical 505 takes a completely different approach. While FR3 is about smoothing things out, ATS Chemical 505 is about fixing what is broken. This tells me immediately that this product is intended for high-mileage engines that are showing signs of age-related degradation. If you own a classic car that idles roughly, consumes oil, or feels sluggish because internal components are stuck together from old varnish and sludge, this is the tool for the job.
The formulation is designed to penetrate deep into the engine to free up these critical moving parts. By addressing sticking timing chain tensioners and oil control valves, the 505 aims to restore the original performance parameters of the engine. It also claims to reduce emissions, which is a significant factor for older vehicles that may struggle to meet modern environmental standards or simply run inefficiently due to poor combustion caused by stuck rings. The result promised is a quiet, smooth idle and restored performance, suggesting that once the sticky parts are freed, the engine breathes and runs more efficiently.
The physical nature of the product reflects its purpose. It is not designed to displace large amounts of oil like the FR3 does. Instead, it is a "treatment" applied to address specific symptoms of engine wear. If your classic car has been sitting for years or has accumulated heavy sludge in the oil galleries, the ATS Chemical 505 is the logical choice to break down those deposits and free up the mechanism before switching to a protective additive. It is the emergency room visit for an engine that isn't running right, rather than the gym membership for general health.
• Best for classic cars seeking fuel economy gains → Hot Shot's Secret FR3, due to its explicit claim of improving fuel economy by up to 5 percent.
• Best for freeing stuck internal components → ATS Chemical 505, as it specifically targets stuck piston rings, lifters, and cam phasers.
• Best for cleaning sludge and restoring compression → ATS Chemical 505, which focuses on cleaning restricted screens and restoring performance in high-mileage engines.
• Best for reducing engine noise via friction reduction → Hot Shot's Secret FR3, designed to diminish lifter and valve noise through advanced synthetic friction reduction.
• Best for targeting specific mechanical failures → ATS Chemical 505, with a detailed list of stuck components including timing chain tensioners and oil control valves.
• Best for versatile use across gas and diesel → Both products work with gas and diesel, but FR3 emphasizes compatibility with both synthetic and conventional oils for broad protection.
For the vast majority of classic car owners looking to maintain their vehicle's longevity and daily drivability, I would choose Hot Shot's Secret FR3. However, if your classic car is suffering from rough idling, low compression, or obvious signs of internal sludge buildup, I recommend starting with ATS Chemical 505 to clear the blockages first. Once the engine is cleaned and the sticking parts are freed, you can follow up with FR3 for long-term protection. In my opinion, FR3 is the superior choice for ongoing care, while ATS Chemical 505 is the essential tool for fixing specific, nagging mechanical issues.
It is designed to reduce friction and wear. If sludge is present, the manufacturer recommends using a separate cleaner like Stiction Eliminator first before applying FR3.
Unlike the FR3 which treats up to 42 quarts, the 505 is a focused solution for high-mileage engines and is not marketed for bulk oil treatment.
Yes, both products are formulated to work with both gasoline and diesel engines. Hot Shot's Secret FR3 explicitly states compatibility with both fuel types and both synthetic and conventional oils, while ATS Chemical 505 is listed for high-mileage gas and diesel engines.
Always check your vehicle's specific warranty guidelines before introducing any non-OEM fluid additives.
