Mathematics has always been a difficult and quite unattractive subject to students in many countries.
The low grades in Mathematics decrease their motivation to learn at all which sometimes even leads to skipping lessons. Another reason why students do not get engaged in Mathematics is that they do not see its practical application and necessity in their lives as well as in other subjects. Some of them consider Mathematics to be just “dry theory”, and they are convinced they are not capable of getting to understand it let alone being successful at it. One more cause is their opinion and experience that it is boring as it usually involves sitting and solving problems with no interaction at all. However, the reality is that Mathematics is very important to the students’ future in every country both their studies (career) and their personal development, especially logical and critical thinking, problem solving in life in general, concentration and perseverance. Those who commit to solving complicated problems during Mathematics lessons do not give up when they have to solve sophisticated problems in real life. Mathematics is everywhere around us. Its relation with almost all subjects is clear, and mathematical knowledge is essential in order to study some other subjects successfully.
We need that to be evident to our students. Our project teachers want our students to discover, see and experience this relation. Working together as an international team we want to discover and present some new innovative and entertaining ways to our international group of students, apply new teaching methods while working with them, get them engaged into new kind of activities and integrate Mathematics with other subjects, our environment and life. All the teachers participating in the project agree that Mathematics is a challenging subject.
The aim of the project is to make Mathematics an interesting, attractive and engaging subject not only to the target group of students participating in the project, but also throughout the project with the help of its diverse activities try to reach as many students as possible in our schools as well as spread the good and efficient practice to some other schools. We believe that this project will allow us to increase students’ motivation to learn and find the beauty and practicality of Mathematics. We want them to experience that "aha moment" which should lead to harder work and better marks. All teachers have a wish to share their good practices and work out new innovative methods as well as prepare material and guidelines for other colleagues experiencing the same problem and wishing toimprove the situation with Mathematics. By the end of the project we want our participating studentsto get “hooked on Mathematics”, and our international team of teachers is ready to prepare the material and present some innovative teaching methods which would allow other colleagues to get their students “hooked on Mathematics” as well.
In order to reach our aim we have some objectives which will lead us to our results:
1.Organizing the module "Interesting Mathematics" in which students will acquire the competences of logical and critical thinking, mental counting, creativity, group and teamwork, concentration and perseverance. While working in a friendly and helpful atmosphere they will experience success and positive emotions. In such a way, they will start seeing the interesting side of Mathematics and get engaged into it.
2. Organizing Short term learning teaching activities in partner countries in which students will gain some competences such as group and team work in an international environment on a difficult and not so interesting to them topic, and the excitement of working together, communication, search for joint decisions, sharing ideas on the serious topics, communication in English, the ability to solve other countries' mathematical problems, seeing different methods will allow them to gain competences such as critical thinking, ICT, tolerance, patience, empathy and helping each other, experience that "aha moment" and see the wide and practical application of Mathematics which will cause their curiosity, motivation and engagement in Mathematics to grow.
3.Organizing some creative and artistic activities for students that they could see the unexpected side of Mathematics and its application. Students will write cinquains on Mathematics and illustrate their poems, make videos, presentations, exhibitions. They will see the value of their works and thusthe gained unusulal, alternative, non-traditional attitude and experience will increase their motivationto Mathematics as well as their self-esteem and self-confidence, leading to willingness to engage into the subject more.
4.Organizing interesting and engaging activities for other students in every country which will be held by the target group of students. As a result, they will gain leadership competences and organizational skills. By organizing activities for others they will get engaged into Mathematics more, look for and find interesting issues.
5.Preparation of the material and guidelines with innovative teaching methods for other teachers who could use that ready made material successfully, apply newly discovered activities and get their students engaged more into Mathematics. Also, this material will be used for integrated lessons (CLIL).
The project results will be new competences gained by the target group students, their interest andengagement in Mathematics, their better marks as well as the cinquain book, videos, events for the schools and communities, the material and guidelines prepared for teachers.
Our objectives are related to the chosen priorities very closely. We will work on students' competences, teachers' professional development and social inclusion as students having motivation and learning as well as economical, geographical difficulties and cultural differences will be involved.
· Attending the module "Interesting Mathematics" will allow the target group students to gain some certain competences, change their attitude towards Mathematics, increase their motivation towards this subject and get them engaged into it more.
· Participating in the Short term learning teaching activities will allow the target group students to gainsome new important knowledge, competences, experiences and practice which will get theminterested into this subject, arise their motivation to learn, increase their self-esteem and selfconfidence causing them to see that it is possible to succeed.
· All creative and artistic activities organised during Short term learning teaching activities and locallywill develop the target group students' non-traditional attitude to the subject, provide them with somecompetences and get interested into new different Mathematical applications, CLIL and STEM.
· All activities organised in every school will promote Mathematisc and its relation with other subjects(CLIL), the interesting side of Mathematics and its practical application.
Teachers will work out some new innovative methods, prepare the material and guidelines which will be used by themselves and will be useful for their colleagues in respect to meeting and fulfilling their students' needs and interests towards Mathematics not only in participating schools but for wider use as well
