Welcome to Howdenshire Archaeological Society (HAS)
Research Group!
Archaeology isn't only about digging holes!
We also need to find out about the background to the site.
Who lived there? What might we find? What happened in the local area?
Hence ... we dig (in holes in the ground) and we delve (in the Archives)!
In 2025, we began our first project - to research the history of St Mary's Church in Hook, especially as 2025 marked the 800th anniversary of this beautiful Church. Since then, we have been carrying out a survey of the churchyard surrounding St Mary's - not only transcribing the names marked on the memorials and researching the stories of the families buried in the graveyard, but also investigating the archaeology of the stones and the funerary practices in the area.
