This seminar explored the problems and pleasures of transportation technologies from the 1880s to the present. We considered our obsession with speed, one of the pleasures and dangers of modernity. For our research project, we accessed materials in the University Archives of the Spencer Research Library for evidence of the big changes we had learned about from readings in the course as they played out at KU. We found evidence of the 1890s “bicycle boom” in the formation of the Mt. Oread Bicycle Club in 1890. We learned about the introduction, use, and removal of electric streetcars on campus, between 1910 and 1933. We saw evidence of early criticism of cars on campus in the 1920s and confirmed that complaints about parking on campus are nothing new. We observed changes to Jayhawk Boulevard, the principal street on campus, as emblematic of the university community’s priorities concerning mobility and public space. We studied the growth of the campus bus program, noting that it, as well as the cycling club, enjoyed a major resurgence in the 1970s. In just the last decade, efforts to modernize the bus system and Jayhawk Boulevard, as well as a failed effort to introduce rental bikes, show how Jayhawks are continuing to confront the pleasures and problems of personal mobility on campus.
