Purple Heart
One of four cousins who enlisted in 1940 and fought with the 1st Division. As a part of Operation Torch, Charles led a MG squad onto the beaches of Algeria in November 1942. After fighting in Africa, he landed in Anzio in July of 1943 where after 38 days of combat, Charles was sent home on a hospital ship due to his wounds. Per a 1943 article, “in his three and a half years of service, Corporal Ker has been to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Culebra, England, Scotland, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Malta, Sicily and Gibraltar. He is very happy to be home and say “The USA is the best place in the world.”
