Despite such hard hitting topics there are still many humorous moments as Frankie finds himself immersed in a caring community of others affected by homelessness. The effective use of close ups during those scenes within this community forces the audience to become more immersed in the plights of the characters living on the streets.

We are told the stories of those who had become bankrupt and those like Frankie who similarly suffered a family trauma before becoming homeless. The authentic filming approach of Homeless Ashes means that as the audience we may find ourselves uncomfortably posing the question as to how close we could be to suffering from homelessness. Equally, the treatment of veterans is explored, with one character falling homeless after serving in the forces but is subsequently subjected to derision from passersby.

During the question and answer session at the Raindance Film Festival, Marc revealed that a portion of the profits from Homeless Ashes will be donated to homeless charities, which is a very admirable gesture.

Based upon stories from real homeless people, Homeless Ashes tells the tale of Frankie, a bright young boy who runs away from an abusive father, after trying to save his mother, and grows up on the streets. Starring Marc Zammit, Angela Dixon Jason Flemyng, Lew Temple, Andrew Lee Pots and Maria Howell.

Q: I also saw that the film is heading to the LA Film Festival soon. I hear a lot about their ballooning homeless population. How important do you feel it is that this film connects with audiences in the US and internationally?

Homeless Ashes has a cast that includes Lew Temple (The Walking Dead, Lawless, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood), Jamey May (The Royals), Hector Bateman-Harden, Jason Flemyng (Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Pennyworth, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button), Andrew Lee Potts (Prime Evil, The Crown) and Maria Howell (Hunger Games, Hidden Figures). The film is about a young boy, Frankie, who is in the middle of an abusive home life. His mother Abbie (played by Angela Dixon) is a victim of domestic violence, inflicted by her abusive husband Stuart (played by Dean Maskell). The pair delivered hugely powerful performances that left the room silent on set, with many of us in tears. After a traumatic experience, Frankie runs away from home, ending up homeless, trying to survive the terrors and the struggles on the streets.

New York State announced in 1983 that special grant monies were available to rehabilitate dwellings to house the homeless through the Homeless Housing Assistance Program. Suffolk County, in particular, faced a severe housing shortage coupled with skyrocketing real estate market values. Suffolk County was initially awarded $250,000 in 1984, and a second grant for $200,000 was awarded in 1985. Finally, in 1986, the county executive named the housing crisis his number one priority and made special staff appointments to further efforts to provide sufficient and affordable housing to meet the mounting need.

The Progressive Property Management program is designed to redirect the approximately 200 habitable residential dwellings in the Department of Real Estate's inventory toward the Department of Social Services' clients to avoid motel placements and unnecessary additional expense. The targeted population addressed by this program is homeless persons who become clients of the Department of Social Services and include the physically and mentally handicapped, senior citizens, minorities, low income, and other classes of indigent people.

To create an even larger housing stock and further reduce motel placements, Federal and state grants were applied for and received to rehabilitate additional residential dwellings from the Department of Real Estate's inventory. Thus, not only is the Department of Social Services' housing stock greatly increased, there is also substantial improvements to dwellings owned by Suffolk County that were previously considered "attractive nuisances." Most importantly, the homeless client is better served.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted those who are homeless. The pandemic has resulted in the closure of daytime services like drop-in centres and the closure of public spaces offering access to washroom facilities such as libraries, along with free Internet access.

The criminalization of housing insecurity, and the links between criminal justice involvement and homelessness, has become particularly evident during the pandemic. There has been a heightened law enforcement response to homelessness and homeless encampments around the world and within Canada, both in practice and policy responses.

SAN DIEGO -- The deadly hepatitis A (HAV) outbreak in San Diego reflects a national spike in cases over the past 15 months and a larger threat to homeless people across the country, health officials said.

In San Diego, almost all the cases are among homeless people and/or illegal drug users. Officials believe the virus is transmitted person-to-person and "through contact with a fecally contaminated environment" -- polite terminology for the feces left in public places by the homeless who've had few restrooms to use.

Officials also distributed "hygiene kits" and started power-washing streets and sidewalks with a bleach solution to address fecal contamination. In addition, the city is opening an outdoors "safe camp" that can serve 200 homeless people.

The homeless population in San Diego, the nation's eighth-largest city, became more visible in recent years for reasons that are unclear. Transients live on sidewalks throughout downtown (where the IDWeek conference is being held), erecting tents and covering their belongings with tarps.

While the CDC recommends that illicit drug users get vaccinated against HAV, there are no guidelines regarding homeless people. They haven't been considered an at-risk group, Foster said, and there's little known about HAV in the transient population. e24fc04721
