The following is taken from the book “Prairie Trails to Hi-Ways” published in 1978 by the Bismarck-Mandan Genealogical and Historical Society. The information was submitted by Emma (Trygg) Dillon. Emma is the daughter of Charles and Minnie Trygg.
Charles J. Trygg was a step-son of August A. Trygg of Gibbs township. His wife, Minnie, was a daughter of John G. Anderson of Naughton township. Both sets of parents were Burleigh county pioneers whose histories are in this book.
Charles Trygg and Minnie Anderson were married in Jamestown, ND, on Nov. 28, 1901. They filed on a homestead in an unsettled area later named Trygg township in Charles' and his brother's honor.
Charles and his brother, Andrew, had plans to be sheep ranchers. Then an influx of homesteaders and there was not enough land available for that project. The sheep were replaced by cattle.
Charles' first civic endeavor was organizing the Trygg School District and he served almost continuously on school and township boards. Later he was on the Federal Agricultural Stabilization Committee.
Several of the homesteaders were bachelors. The Trygg home was their second home. Minnie baked their bread and churned their butter. She had a way of preparing a great meal out of almost nothing. No matter who came by - a neighbor, the "Watkins man", a peddler, insurance salesman, or whoever there was always an invitation to stay for dinner.
Their children are: Mildred (Mrs. Roy Smu land) Springfield, MO; Emma (Mrs. John F. Dil lon) Bismarck, ND; John, Baldwin, ND (home farm).
Charles and Minnie Trygg had been married 63 years when Charles passed away in 1964. Minnie died in 1969. At that time she was the only original settler living in the township, thus the first and the last. Emma Trygg Dillon.
