❄️ Winter Bees, Winter Jobs
As the season quietens down, the hive may look calm from the outside, but inside the bees are working hard to stay warm, protect their stores, and prepare for the colder months ahead.
For beekeepers, this time of year is often the best opportunity to reduce Varroa mite levels even further helping colonies head into spring in the strongest shape possible.
🌫️ A Gentle Cloud
This time, we used a vapour treatment to help combat Varroa. The treatment creates a fine vapour inside the hive, allowing it to spread through the colony and target mites hiding on the bees.
It’s a quick process, but an important one, and is often most effective when there is little or no brood in the hive meaning more mites are exposed and fewer are tucked away inside sealed brood cells.
💡 Did you know?
Varroa mites reproduce inside capped brood cells, hidden away with developing bees. That’s why many winter treatments are timed for when brood levels are naturally low, giving treatments the best possible chance of success.
🐝 Calm Throughout
The bees took it all in their stride, remaining calm and clustered together. Good beekeeping often means small interventions at the right time, rather than constant disturbance.
Sometimes the biggest help we can give is brief, timely care then letting the colony get on with being bees.
🙏 A Thank You
As we hadnt used this treatment before, we would like to give a special thank you to Maria from the Braintree Beekeepers for sharing her expertise once again and kindly lending us the equipment needed for the treatment.
Having knowledgeable and generous people around you makes all the difference when learning beekeeping, and we’re incredibly grateful for the continued support.
🌼 Looking Ahead
With autumn treatments complete, the hive can now focus fully on winter survival: keeping warm, protecting the queen, and waiting patiently for the first signs of spring.
For us, it’s reassuring to know we’ve done another small but meaningful job to help Beryl and her family through to brighter days.
🐝 Little Beekeeper’s Notes
Varroa = a parasitic mite that weakens bees and spreads viruses.
Vapour treatment = a method used to control mites using medicated vapour inside the hive.
Low brood period = often the most effective time for certain Varroa treatments.
