What does an Athletic Trainer do?

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified allied health care professionals who provide services for injury evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries, emergency care/first aid, practice and event coverage, and injury prevention.

As an AT for HHS, Katy is present during high school athletic practices and games, where she is able to assist student athletes with injury management or evaluation when it is needed. Katy is well educated and trained on concussion management and testing. She is educated in protocols concerning hot weather safety and lightening safety. Katy is also here to help educate coaches, staff, and parents on her role as an AT and the the care given to Hollister student athletes.

Katy can be found in the Field House (between baseball and football field) during Fall and Spring sports or in her office in the Main gym in the High School (across from the girls basketball locker room) during Winter sports. She is available daily from 2:00pm-6:30pm, or until practices or event ends.

Physicals:

Each student athlete is required to have a current, and valid physical on file to participate in Hollister Athletics. Katy is the keeper of high school physicals.

MSHSAA recently changed the requirements on physicals. Physicals are now valid for 2 years instead of 1 year. If you have questions about your student athlete's physical, please contact their head coach or Katy.

There are resources Hollister School District provides for student athletes to receive a physical, if one is needed. In the spring, Hollister hosts a Free Physical Night. Also, Jordan Valley provides a Nurse Practitioner for services 1 day/week that can be arranged through Nurse Brenda Collins.

Other resources: local medical providers through Cox Health are available in Branson; Urgent care will provide physicals for $25.

Pre Participation Eligibility Requirements:

Each student athlete is required to have a current PPE form on file to participate in Hollister Athletics. Per MSHSAA, this form is required to be updated yearly. This form gives Katy and other healthcare professionals (EMS, MDs, Nurses, etc) permission to provide medical care with a parent/guardian consent, provides an important and updated medical history, and provides Hollister and Katy with valid health insurance and emergency contact information.

Per MSHSAA, each student athlete is required, by law, to have health insurance to participate in athletics. If parents/guardians are unable to provide valid health insurance, health insurance is available to be purchased through Hollister School District. Contact Nyla Milleson (Athletic Director) if you need assistance accessing health insurance.

Concussion Management & Information:

Currently Hollister High School does not participate in baseline testing for concussions. This will hopefully change in the near future. More information will be provided if baseline testing becomes available.

When a student athlete sustains a concussion or a possible concussion, Katy will evaluate the athlete thoroughly. The student athlete will be asked to complete a SCAT5 or a symptom checklist.

Covid-19 Return to Play

If a student athlete is diagnosed with Covid-19, that athlete is required to follow the Return To Play protocol created by MSHSAA, before returning to full participation in athletic events. This protocol will be supervised by Katy and the necessary coaching staff. That student athlete must have a clearance by a physician or a nurse practitioner before starting the return to play process. Once it is complete, the student athlete will be able to participate in athletic without restrictions.
