"Hold the Line" was a perfect example of what people will describe as your heavy metal chord guitar licks, your great triplet A-notes on the piano, your 'Sly'-hot-fun-in-the-summertime groove, all mishmashed together with a boy from New Orleans singing... and it really crossed over a lot of lines."[3]

Keyboardist David Paich noted that the song was relatively easy to develop. He began with the piano riff, which would become the song's intro and chorus. After toying with the piano riff one night, he started singing "Hold the line, love isn't always on time", and found the lyric to be a suitable fit. The verses were subsequently finished two hours later.

It's not in the way that you hold me

It's not in the way you say you care

It's not in the way you've been treating my friends

It's not in the way that you stayed till the end

It's not in the way you look or the things that you say that you do

Hold the line

Love isn't always on time

Love isn't always, love isn't always on time

Hold the line

Love isn't always on time

Love isn't always on time

Love isn't always on time

Love isn't always on time, oh oh oh

Anybody ever been in a relationship with a great person, it looked like a keeper on paper, yet...it just wasn't destined to work out? One person is a little more eager/desperate than the other one to stay in a relationship that is going nowhere. The other person is good-looking, smart, kind, has a good job, is responsible with their money, generous, and best of all likes you. But the mix just doesn't turn into a real committed love. So, you "hold the line", an expression used in military and football, meaning don't give up and keep trying. That's what this song is about.

@JayCeezy yes been there, done that. It didn't end too pretty most of the time. I would say my husband and I did this when we first got together though, so I would say it did finally work in the end but we both at least knew that the other was smitten and so were we. That was the difference. Sometimes love can be complicated and holding the line during the rough patches has worked out so far. Only time will tell if it will continue to. I do love this song and it's honesty.

To edit my previous comment: "Love isn't always on time" can be very true. A year ago, this man was in love with me and I wasn't there yet. Fast forward a year and with time, I did eventually catch up. Not without some ups and downs with my feelings. He recently moved in with me and I am very much in love with him. It was just on MY time and not his. Often times, love doesn't happen for both people at the exact same time but it can happen with time. I needed him to "Hold the line" and he did. It doesn't always end badly. Sometimes, there is a happy ending.

the song is talking about love and timing. clearly. its saying that it might take time for love to come but it will come. not right away and you might have to wait or "hold the line" but love perseveres through all and shows its face when the time is right. thats what the song is about.

The chorus, with its repeated proclamation 'Hold the line, love isn't always on time,' serves as a catchy yet profound reminder that love does not adhere to a strict schedule. It implies that relationships may face challenges and that love might not manifest in the ways or at the times we expect. The phrase 'hold the line' can be interpreted as a call to remain steadfast and not give up on love, even when it's not immediately gratifying or when it deviates from our preconceived notions of romantic timing. 0852c4b9a8
