About Me

My name is Heather Miceli and I am currently an independent scholar, looking for work in higher education faculty development. I formerly taught general education science/biology at Roger Williams University and Johnson & Wales University, both private, 4-year universities in Rhode Island. I've been teaching since 2008 and picked up a few tips and tricks along the way, and hoping to use this space as a way to share them, because I am a pedagogy nerd.

I have a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College (Joint Program). I also have a M.O. in Oceanography and a B.S. in Marine Biology, both also from the University of Rhode Island. My dissertation focused on the pedagogical development of adjunct professors in the sciences. My current interests include pretty much anything higher ed pedagogy (you can adapt anything for your needs) but most specifically, open educational resources and open pedagogy, ungrading, reflective writing in the sciences. I'm also very interested in the contingency problem in higher education.

I am also a human being with other interests that have nothing to do with my work. I'm a wife and a mother. I like to read all sorts of books, usually as determined by a number of book clubs I am a part of. I cross stitch. I love fandom culture - my current fandom of choice is Star Wars. I love period dramas. I like to watch sports and get crazy upset during playoffs. I love living in and exploring the state of Rhode Island - I came here for college at 18 and never left.
