The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy[1] is a BBC television adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which aired between 5 January and 9 February 1981 on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth iteration of the guide.

The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian and Stephen Moore as the voice of Marvin. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones. Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Moore and Wing-Davey reprised their roles from the original radio series in 1978/80, as did supporting actors Richard Vernon and David Tate. Adams claimed that the title came from a 1971 incident while he was hitchhiking around Europe as a young man with a copy of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe book: while lying drunk in a field near Innsbruck with a copy of the book and looking up at the stars, he thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well. However, he later claimed that he had forgotten the incident itself, and only knew of it because he'd told the story of it so many times. His friends are quoted as saying that Adams mentioned the idea of "hitch-hiking around the galaxy" to them while on holiday in Greece in 1973.[14]

Adams's fictional Guide is an electronic guidebook to the entire universe, originally published by Megadodo Publications, one of the great publishing houses of Ursa Minor Beta. The narrative of the various versions of the story is frequently punctuated with excerpts from the Guide. The voice of the Guide (Peter Jones in the first two radio series and TV versions, later William Franklyn in the third, fourth and fifth radio series, and Stephen Fry in the movie version), also provides general narration.

In September 2004, it was revived by the BBC on the Hitchhiker's section of the Radio 4 website for the initial broadcast of the Tertiary Phase, and is still available to play online.[72][73] This new version uses an original Infocom datafile with a custom-written interpreter, by Sean Soll, and Flash programming by Shimon Young, both of whom used to work at The Digital Village (TDV). The new version includes illustrations by Rod Lord, who was head of Pearce Animation Studios in 1980, which produced the guide graphics for the TV series. On 2 March 2005 it won the Interactive BAFTA in the "best online entertainment" category.[74][75]

One Thursday lunchtime, the Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who had only just had his house demolished that morning, this already seems like more than he can cope with. Hitchhikers follows the journey of a constantly bewildered Arthur through the galaxy as he is guided along by his eccentric friend from Betelguese, Ford Prefect. Along the way he encounters alien life, gets thrown off spaceships, discovers the true nature of Earth, travels through time, stretches the limits of improbability to their breaking point and searches for the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

The handy galactic encyclopedia also considers the sound logic of non-hitchhikers for their sensible conclusions that "any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

The Infinite Improbability Drive was introduced in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. The engine that propels the main characters' starship, the Heart of Gold, the Drive perfectly represents the union of humor and sci-fi that made Douglas Adams' work such a cult hit. It's used to get out of sticky situations, made more effective by how impossible an escape would seem. Its first shown use is rescuing Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect out of open space, with odds of success at 2 to the power of 276,709 to one. By traveling through every conceivable point in every conceivable universe simultaneously, it can slingshot a spaceship across the galaxy, without any "tedious mucking about in hyperspace." However, its side effects can be dastardly (and ridiculous): transforming a pair of nuclear warheads into a vase of petunias and a sperm whale, turning the crew into knit dolls, or creating then dumping a million-gallon tub of custard.

This book is about Arthur Dent, a man who's house is being destroyed to make way for a bypass. At about the same time the vogons, (aliens) are about to destroy Earth to make way for another bypass. Ford Prefect is Arthur's best friend who also happens do be an alien. They hitch a ride on the vogon ship and are thrown into space where against all improbabilities they are picked up by the Heart of Gold spaceship which is piloted by Zaphod Beeblebrox, president of the galaxy. Along with him is Trillian a human like Arthur. Together they go on a hilarious adventure across space. I absolutely love this book. It can be a little confusing but mainly it's easy to understand. There's great humor. I went on to read the rest of the series and am on book 3 and also watched the movie.

The series generally focuses on the haphazard journeys through the Galaxy of Arthur Dent, an ordinary man who becomes one of the only survivors of the human race after the Earth is destroyed for trivial reasons by Vogons. He becomes the companion of intergalactic hitchhiker Ford Prefect, with their party also joined by the eccentric, deserting President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox, a superintelligent but depressed android called Marvin, and Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), the only other survivor of humanity. They become embroiled in a quest for "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything", with it being revealed that the Earth was not a naturally-occurring planet but was instead created by a race of pandimensional beings as an organic supercomputer to calculate the Question.

The Pirate Planet, the first produced Doctor Who story written by Adams, debuted a few months after the radio series, airing between 30 September and 31 October 1978. It had the Fourth Doctor quote "Don't panic!", the tagline of the in-universe guidebook and a phrase frequently used by Ford Prefect, and introduced the planet Qualactin and the mineral Madranite. A year later, Destiny of the Daleks, broadcast in September 1979, had the Doctor prominently mention the planet Betelgeuse, the home of Ford Prefect. It also mentioned Oolon Colluphid as the author of a book about "the origins of the universe" which the Doctor found laughable; the opening of the radio series had mentioned him as the author of multiple sceptical theological books: Where God Went Wrong, Some More Of God's Greatest Mistakes, and Just Who Is This God Person, Anyway?.

You should also be aware that Hitchhiker's Guide's birthday is celebrated on the 8th March (hence this date in 2018 was chosen to launch the new series), while Towel Day (every galactic hitchhiker needs a towel) is celebrated on 25th May. 2351a5e196
