CURT 21800 hitch covers win because their durable rubber encapsulation offers the most reliable shield against rust and corrosion for the actual ball itself. The Toyota Hitch Cover takes the runner-up spot if you drive a Japanese brand vehicle and want an OEM aesthetic that matches your factory trim perfectly.
• CURT 21800 — best for protecting the trailer ball from rust; pick this if you need a simple, friction-fit rubber cap that completely seals the metal sphere from rain and road grime.
• Toyota Hitch Cover — best for matching factory styling on Toyotas; pick this if you prefer a rigid stainless steel plug that fits the receiver tube without needing a strap or tool.
• BougeRV 2 — best for keeping the receiver tube clean during storage; pick this if you need a soft rubber insert with a built-in tether to prevent losing the cover in the car wash.
• SINGARO Fits — best for lightweight durability with a decorative flag look; pick this if you want a slim profile made of rubber and aluminum that resists extreme temperature swings.
This is not a plug that goes inside a square hole; it is a dedicated shield designed specifically for the round metal ball protruding from your hitch. When you are not towing a trailer, that exposed ball is sitting there waiting for moisture, salt, and road debris to eat away at the chrome or painted finish. This cover wraps entirely around that sphere, creating a sealed environment that keeps the elements out. It is a straightforward solution for a very specific problem: keeping the towing point itself from corroding while parked.
I recommend this choice for anyone who lives in an area with harsh winters or heavy road salt usage. The black rubber material is thick enough to withstand bending and tearing, yet flexible enough to slide over the ball by hand. There are no screws, clips, or keys required. You simply press it down until it grips the metal tightly. When it is time to tow, you pull it off and toss it in your glove box. It disappears instantly so you can hook up your trailer in seconds.
The main trade-off here is its singular purpose. This item does nothing for the square receiver tube where the ball mount inserts. If your concern is only about the ball staying shiny and rust-free, this is the ideal tool. However, if you also worry about water pooling inside the hollow tube of your receiver, you will need a separate plug for that. For pure ball protection, though, the friction fit design is hard to beat because it stays put without any moving parts to break.
If you own a Toyota truck or SUV, there is something undeniably satisfying about using a part that was engineered right at the source. This cover is a stainless steel plug designed to sit flush inside the square receiver tube of your hitch. Unlike rubber stoppers that might sag or deform over time, this piece holds its shape firmly. It serves as a barrier against mud, snow, and ice entering the hollow space of the receiver, which is where rust often starts first.

I find this option perfect for owners who value aesthetics alongside function. The stainless steel construction gives it a sleek, metallic finish that blends seamlessly with other exterior components of the vehicle. It feels substantial and secure when you push it into place. There is no loose rubber strap flapping in the wind or risking damage during a high-pressure wash. It is a "set it and forget it" solution that looks like a permanent fixture rather than an afterthought accessory.
The limitation is that it is likely tailored to specific receiver dimensions found on Toyota vehicles. While many hitches share standard sizes, the exact fitment relies on the manufacturer's specifications. If you have a modified hitch or a non-standard tube thickness, this might not slide in as smoothly as a universal rubber option. Additionally, since it is a rigid metal piece, it does not offer the same shock absorption as rubber if the vehicle hits a bump while covered. Still, for the right vehicle, it is the cleanest-looking way to protect the receiver tube.
This product addresses a common annoyance: losing your hitch cover in the car wash. Many people have experienced the frustration of washing their truck, driving home, and realizing the little plastic or rubber plug they shoved in the tube has been ejected by the pressure jets. The BougeRV design includes a distinct rubber strap attached to the body of the plug. This strap loops through a small hole in the hitch receiver or attaches to a fixed point, ensuring the cover stays tethered to the vehicle even under heavy spray.
The material choice here leans heavily into durability and flexibility. The soft rubber construction allows it to compress slightly to ensure a tight seal within the tube, blocking dust and debris effectively. The textured surface adds grip and helps the rubber resist cracking over time. It is a practical, utilitarian piece of gear that prioritizes keeping the receiver clean without requiring you to fiddle with screws or tools. It slides in easily and stays there unless you intentionally remove it.
My primary reservation with this design is the reliance on the strap for security. While the strap prevents total loss, it adds a small visual element that some might find less polished than a flush-fitting metal plug. Furthermore, the rubber needs to be inspected occasionally to ensure the attachment point hasn't worn thin. Despite this, it is an excellent choice for those who frequently wash their vehicles or live in areas with frequent rain and snow. It solves the "lost plug" problem better than almost any other option on the market.
For those who want a balance between rugged utility and a bit of style, this cover stands out. It features a distinctive flag-shaped exterior that sits proud of the receiver tube, giving the rear of the vehicle a unique look. The construction combines black soft rubber with aluminum sheets, a hybrid approach that aims to get the best of both worlds. The aluminum provides rigidity and structure, while the rubber offers a weather-resistant seal and resistance to impact.
This design is particularly appealing for drivers who leave their vehicles parked outdoors for long periods. The materials are rated to handle extreme heat and cold without becoming brittle or deforming. It creates a solid barrier against small animals, rodents, and water trying to burrow into the hitch tube. The installation is equally simple; you just push it into the tube, and the friction holds it in place securely. There is no need for extra hardware or complex assembly.
The trade-off lies in the size and profile. Because it includes the aluminum flag component, it sticks out further from the vehicle than a simple flush plug. This could be a concern if you park in tight spaces where the rear bumper clearance is minimal. It is also slightly lighter than the heavier-duty rubber options, which might feel less substantial to some users. However, for the price-to-performance ratio and the added visual flair, it remains a strong contender for anyone looking to protect their hitch with a touch of personality.

No, you must match the cover type to your hitch receiver size (usually 1.25 or 2 inches) and whether you need to cover the ball or the tube. Universal designs exist, but measurements vary by model.
Most basic covers like the ones listed here do not require keys; they rely on friction fits or straps. Locking versions are available separately if theft prevention is a major concern.
Absolutely not. You must remove any ball cover before attaching a trailer, and you must remove tube plugs before inserting a hitch receiver. Leaving them on will prevent proper connection and could damage the equipment.
Materials matter significantly. Stainless steel and high-grade rubber generally resist rust well, while cheap plastics or untreated metals may degrade faster in wet or salty conditions. Check the material description carefully.
