High expectations have been communicated and are still being set for our students to strive for excellence daily. Our students are already exceeding those expectations every day! H.I.S. chooses LOVE!

5th Grade

What a great week for our 5th graders to come back to school! We started with a beautiful, clean bright white canvas called, snow! The students and teachers were so excited to be back. In social studies we decided to start the year off with a review of where we left off with the Civil War and then discuss important battles and leaders. Math is so impressed with how hard our students have worked returning to school after such a wonderful break. It is so wonderful to see their faces. This week we have started reviewing previously taught concepts such as data and personal financial literacy. All of their work is looking amazing and they have remembered so much! Students began the new year with a new module - Project Earth! The first story is a persuasive text about urban gardens and farms. We divided the story into sections, and students chose which section they would like to summarize in order to present to their classmates at the end of the week. Students worked in small groups of 2-3, reading together while taking notes. Then they created a Google slideshow, focusing on main ideas, critical vocabulary, text structure, author’s opinion, and media/graphics. Students also took their middle of the year AR level tests for new reading levels. This week in science, students will be studying each process of the water cycle and how it moves between the atmosphere and earth. Students will also identify the role the sun and ocean play in the water cycle and demonstrate their understanding with a quiz.

In Tier 2 Eagle Reading this week, middle of the year reading benchmark assessments are taking place. These benchmark assessments will determine if students are progressing in their reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. If it is determined that students have made progress in the above 3 areas, they will move up to a new reading level.

If students are not engaged in a reading benchmark they are working on self-sustaining reading at their independent reading level or engaged in the Lexia Core 5 reading program.
