The 4-H program empowers children to be healthy, mentally and physically with the skills to make healthy decisions and lead healthy lifestyles. Confidence and having the necessary skills to live a healthy lifestyle improves one's well-being. It also allows our youth to tackle life’s challenges today and become leaders in careers and communities as they become adults.
4‑H’s Healthy Living programs provide youth with a better understanding of how their choices can help themselves, their families, and their communities.
4‑H fitness, health, nutrition, and safety programs help youth understand the importance of eating right, and being active within a safe environment.
4‑H Healthy Living programs empower youth to be teachers by growing their leadership skills and serving as champions of health in their communities.
In Hilo, there are various 4-H groups that children can join with various focuses. Some areas of focus are STEM, agriculture, healthy living, and civic engagement. If you are unable to find a club, there is the possibility to create your own. 4-H is a community in itself, each club helping each other and interacting during different social events.
One social event that many look forward to is County Camp, where all the 4-H clubs on the island come together to create new relationships and improve already existing ones. Everyone who attends County Camp is able to learn from it in their own way. County Camps usually have a theme each year, exposing all 4-Her who attend to unique and interesting subjects.
Another social event is 4-H Congress, where 4-Hers from around the country meet and participate in the national convention. It is the highlight and honor for 4-Hers, only awarded to a select few from each state.
At 4-H Congress 4-Hers participate in amazing workshops such as Dancing with the Stars (learning various types of dances), speed meeting ("it's like speed dating, but used to get to know 4-Hers from around the country"), and UAS- R U READY (learning to operate drones in a safe manner). Located in Atlanta, those who are fortunate to attend this convention are able to see various Atlanta attractions like the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. While there, 4-Hers are grouped and bused to various community service projects around Atlanta such as cleaning up schools, parks, or organizing canned goods for distribution. It is a fun, memorable, and impactful experience.
