The presented visualization here is to help you understand the different power sources throughout the US.

Data

The following list of steps will guide to format and clean up the data:

Go to https://www.epa.gov/egrid/download-data.
Download “eGRID2018v2 Data File (XLSX)” and “eGRID historical files (1996-2016) (ZIP)”
Make sure that both the eGRID2018v2 Data File and the unzipped eGRID historical files (1996-2016) are stored in the same folder, which will be your working directory.
Open the eGRID2018v2 Data File and delete all of the tabs in this file except the PLNT18 tab.
Replace contents of B2 for “Year”
Replace contents of C2 for “PlantState”
Replace contents of D2 for “PlantName”
Replace contents of H2 for “UtilityName”
Replace contents of T2 for “Latitude”
Replace contents of U2 for “Longitude”
Replace contents of V2 for “NumberOfUnits”
Replace contents of W2 for “NumberOfGenerators”
Replace contents of AN2 for “AnnualGenerationTotal”
Replace contents of DD2 for “COAL_TOTAL”
Replace contents of DE2 for “OIL_TOTAL”
Replace contents of DF2 for “GAS_TOTAL”
Replace contents of DG2 for “NUCLEAR_TOTAL”
Replace contents of DH2 for “HYDRO_TOTAL”

Delete the following columns in this order:
A, D-F, E-O, I-X, J-BX, W-Y, AJ-AL
Delete row 1.
Select column E “Latitude”, click on the Home tab, click on “Sort&Filter,” and then click on ”Sort Smallest to largest.” Lastly, scroll down to the end of the csv file and delete the rows (data entries) that do not have any Latitude information since we will not be able to accurately map those entries on the map.
Then make sure to follow the same steps that you followed in Step 42 to get rid of rows (data entries) that do not have Longitude information since we’ll not be able to map those entries accurately either.

Interesting Findings in the Data

There are no plants in Alabama that produce geothermal energy sources.
