High Stakes Poker is an American cash game poker television program. The poker variant played on the show is no limit Texas hold 'em. The first four seasons ran from January 16, 2006 to December 17, 2007 on GSN. The next three seasons ran from March 1, 2009 to May 21, 2011, and was simulcast in 3DTV on N3D.[1] The show was revived on December 16, 2020 on PokerGO.

The show was hosted by A. J. Benza in the first five seasons, alongside Gabe Kaplan. In the sixth season, Kara Scott replaced Benza as Kaplan's co-host, with Scott conducting interviews from the poker room floor. In the seventh season, Norm Macdonald replaced Kaplan as Scott's co-host. Beginning with the eighth season, Benza and Kaplan returned as hosts.[2] After the first episode of the tenth season, Kaplan retired and was replaced by Nick Schulman.[3]

The first season of High Stakes Poker, taped at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, was first broadcast on January 16, 2006, at 9:00 p.m., and consisted of 13 episodes until April 10, 2006, hosted by A. J. Benza and comedian/actor-turned-poker pro Gabe Kaplan.

GSN later announced it would be scaling back its airings of High Stakes Poker after PokerStars pulled out of the U.S. market following the indictments in United States v. Scheinberg et al. crackdown on online gambling.[10]

The players include poker professionals along with amateurs such as Jerry Buss and Fred Chamanara. The show was created by executive producer Henry Orenstein. In season one, Daniel Negreanu confirmed in a post on his website's forums that all players were paid $1,250 per hour for taking part and that 13 episodes were edited down from 24 hours of actual play.[20] 2006 WSOP Main Event Champion Jamie Gold commented that players were paid for participating, though they had to put much more money at risk to get to play the game. Gold also spoke about his interactions with other players, particularly Mike Matusow.[21] The theme song for the show is titled "I'm All In", written and performed by John Pratt.[citation needed]

Most seasons included a key sponsor. Over the years, they included notable companies like PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Bellagio. The eighth and ninth seasons were sponsored by Poker King, an online poker app focused on the Asian market. Season 10 was sponsored by PokerGO Hold'em, while Season 11 sponsors included StormX, True Classic, and Solve for Why.

It\u2019s the summer of 2019; I\u2019m at the Boston Harbor Encore poker room grinding $1/3 with a $300 buy in. There\u2019s no more than $4,000 in my bank account and I have a good view of the high limit portion of the poker room where $5/10+ cash tables are held. The players\u2019 stacks have denominations of chips I\u2019m not familiar with.. mostly green and black colored chips, not the usual site of castles of red in $1/3. Curiosity gets the best of me as I ask my table, \u201CWhat\u2019s the buy in for $5/10?\u201D. Someone responds, \u201Cit\u2019s $1,500 max buy in\u201D. And I can\u2019t help but think to myself.. \u201CHow incredibly irresponsible for someone to buy-in for this much money at a poker table\u201D.

As a high stakes noobie (having only played for about a year), I think these games are preposterous and very silly. We swing hundreds of thousands of dollars.. for what? Whether I win or lose in a poker session at this point doesn\u2019t change my life - I\u2019m going to Chipotle for food either way, maybe if I win then I deserve a treat like adding guac. The money won ends up going into my players\u2019 bank where it sits there, waiting for the day I run bad and start using the excess funds and pull from short term winnings. The money I lose.. well it was never really in my possession anyways sitting in a casino bank. So win or lose, my life stays exactly the same.

This isn\u2019t to say I\u2019m not grateful or blessed for the opportunity to play in these high stakes games.. the upside is incredible - I have the ability to make poker content unlike any other and I can\u2019t thank Ryan Feldman enough for the opportunity to play in life-changing games that\u2019s altered my content. But there is something to be said about the downside.. like going broke if I lost 5-10 sessions in a row which is somewhat of an inevitable possibility for anyone who\u2019s played this game. The risks are real and part of the problem when I don\u2019t sell much action in these games combined with not even being close to properly bankrolled for these games. You just need to have so so so much capital to play in these games sustainably, and unfortunately I have to admit.. I don\u2019t got it like that. For full transparency, I have 100% of my own action in 95% of the streams you\u2019ve seen me play.. only outliers are the million dollar game and one time I sold publicly for a 200/400 game.

The past few years you can safely say I\u2019ve sun ran my entire short poker career. The issue is that it certainly won\u2019t last forever and last weekend was a quick glimpse into what life in a downswing would certainly look like. At this point with my current experience, I understand what it\u2019s like to swing 100-300K in a single session and wit the stakes we\u2019re playing.. it\u2019s all normal and part of the process. Mentally, it\u2019s a potential outcome I can face.. but off the felt, these swings have true real life consequences. Without getting into specifics, I\u2019m swinging an incredibly high percentage off my net worth/life roll in an extremely volatile way.. one that\u2019s unsustainable. I don\u2019t have any answers but just want to offer aa reflection about the current high stakes environment I\u2019m facing. Will I still battle and play these stakes next chance I get to on Hustler Live? Probably. Will anything drastically change from now til next year? Probably not. But I do think it\u2019s at least important to be more conscience of our decisions and be calculated when doing things a magnitude and scale like this. Still learning, questioning, and trying to grow.. here\u2019s to some run good soon, I surely need it lol
