Competition Air / biathlon

Highlands Trailblazers Competitive Air Rifle Biathlon Team is comprised of athletes that compete at the provincial level, have the desire to compete at the Provincial Championships, and who focus on training and learning to be competitive.

The aim of the Trailblazers organization is to develop competent technical skiers and well balanced athletes ranging in age from 14 to 20. Our Head Coach oversees a number of other qualified coaches who deliver training programs to the athletes.

Athletes participating in the Biathlon Competitive Programs will also need to purchase the appropriate race licenses from sport organizing bodies (Biathlon Canada, Biathlon Ontario)


This is a year round program to help develop athletes to compete both locally and provincially. This program is for experienced biathletes that want to train their skills to a high level, and are interested in competing in multiple Nordic and biathlon events throughout the year. With a focus on race competition, Comp A/R athletes train to a plan that combines group practices, independent workouts and the athlete's other sports and activities.

All athletes are part of the Nordic Jr Comp Team, and a majority of training is performed as part of the larger team. Dryland training begins in July and will include roller skiing, ski striding, running, cycling and weekly strength training to develop the physical strength, balance, and flexibility to support enhanced ski performance. Rifle training will focus on refining the prone positioning using an S-400 compressed-air rifle, advanced precision skills, high intensity combination shooting skills, and race specific shooting tactics.


13-14/15 (Biathlon Junior and Senior categories respectively) or by invite based on sport specific speed ability

Coaching Objectives

  • Guide the athletes, involve the parents, and mentor new prospective coaches
  • Develop skills and talents necessary to graduate athletes to further levels of personal success
  • Create the team environment needed to be able to compete well at all HTB events
  • Allow appropriate challenges to generate individual and team growth
  • Work closely with HTBCT Nordic Jr. Comp coach to coordinate season plans, race schedules and weekly training load

HTB Comp-Air Athlete Expectations

  • be a positive influence to the program
  • be honest with your efforts and generous with your spirit
  • respect your teammates and their time
  • communicate with the coaching staff if unable to attend a scheduled event
  • show a great interest when the coach talks too much and you just want to go ski :-)

Athlete Program requirements

  1. sign the code of conduct
  2. take part in coaching education opportunities
  3. have a quality sport-watch or heart rate monitor with chronometer/timer
  4. maintain contact with the coaches when recovering from illness or injury
  5. keep a very very very detailed notebook of all coaching lectures :-)

Athlete Equipment Requirements

  1. 1 pair skate race skis
  2. 1 pair skate training (“rock”) skis for use in all conditions
  3. 1 pair classic training skis for use in all conditions
  4. poles with lengths as suggested by the coach for skate and classic
  5. 1pr skate roller-skis (and helmet)
  6. appropriate roller ski poles with correct ferrules and grips
  7. ski striding poles (5cm shorter than your suggested classic length)
  8. .177-caliber compressed air-cylinder biathlon rifle (owned or leased)

Program Fees

$1100.00* +$75 Ammunition and Equipment fee

*Registrants in the HTB competition teams (nordic and biathlon) and Junior Development must purchase a season pass from Highlands Nordic.
