Dear Highland Park SEPAG Families,
SEPAG leadership team has made the difficult decision to resign from our roles, effective immediately.
This decision follows recent discussions with district administration regarding the role and operation of SEPAG. The district has clarified that it considers SEPAG to be a district organization, that district representatives must be present at all meetings, and that all speakers and presentations must be reviewed and approved in advance by the district.
As a team, we have always understood SEPAG to be a parent-led advisory group, as described in the New Jersey Department of Education’s SEPAG guidance, one that collaborates with, but operates independently from, the district to represent the voices of families of students with disabilities. This independence is essential to ensure that families can speak freely about their experiences, and for SEPAG to effectively advise the district. Unfortunately, under the district’s new position, we no longer have the ability to fulfill that role.
As a result, we are canceling the upcoming SEPAG meeting previously scheduled for November 13th and all currently scheduled meetings – including parent support group meetings. For any future SEPAG meetings, updates, or information, please reach out directly to the Highland Park School District’s Office of Special Education.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to all the families who have joined meetings, contributed ideas, or simply shared their time with us. Over the years, SEPAG has been a place where parents could connect, exchange experiences, and feel supported by one another.
It has been a true privilege to serve this community. We hope that the spirit of collaboration, empathy, and partnership that guided our efforts will continue to inspire positive change for all Highland Park students with disabilities and their families.
With appreciation and respect,
The Highland Park SEPAG Leadership Team
