If you want a planar magnetic headphone with a wide frequency response and ultra-lightweight diaphragm for critical listening at home or on the go, choose HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size; if need professional-grade closed-back isolation with replaceable parts and memory foam comfort for long studio sessions, choose Austrian Audio.
• HIFIMAN SUNDARA: Delivers exceptional detail and speed thanks to an 80% thinner diaphragm than its predecessor, but requires a dedicated amplifier like the SuperMini to unlock its full potential due to its specific impedance needs. Best for audiophiles who prioritize sonic transparency and speed over isolation.
• Austrian Audio Hi-X60: Offers robust passive noise cancellation and professional dynamic drivers in a durable metal build, making it ideal for loud environments where sound leakage must be prevented. Best for engineers, musicians, and travelers needing isolation and durability.
• The HIFIMAN is the pick for the laptop user who wants a high-fidelity, open experience with a sleek matte finish, while the Austrian Audio wins for anyone needing a rugged, foldable tool that survives daily travel and studio abuse.
The HIFIMAN SUNDARA is designed for listeners who crave a "velvet glove over a marble fist" approach to audio. Its core strength lies in the newly developed diaphragm, which is 80% thinner than the HE400 series. This engineering choice isn't just about weight; it translates directly into a wider frequency response that ranges from 6 Hz to 75 kHz. If you are someone who listens to complex orchestral pieces or intricate electronic tracks, this extended range allows you to hear details that other headphones simply smooth over. The driver type is Planar Magnetic, a technology known for faster transient response, meaning the music feels more immediate and precise.
However, this performance comes with a specific requirement. The Sundara has an impedance of 32 ohms and a sensitivity of 94 dB, which means it will not perform well when plugged directly into a standard laptop jack or a phone without help. You need a partner like the slimline SuperMini amplifier to provide the abundance of power output required to drive these drivers effectively. Without this external source, you might find the sound lacks the necessary punch and depth. Therefore, this headphone is strictly for those willing to carry a small amp or have a dedicated desktop setup.

Comfort is another major selling point here. The headband features a weight-spreading strap that distributes pressure evenly, paired with a sleek, sumptuous matte black finish that looks modern rather than bulky. The enclosure material is metal, ensuring the headband can withstand the rigors of urban street life. If your primary use case involves carrying the headphones in a bag and taking them out for focused listening sessions on your laptop, the all-metal construction offers peace of mind against wear and tear. Yet, because it is an open design (implied by the lack of passive noise cancellation features in the data), it lets sound in and out freely. You cannot use this for commuting on a noisy train or in a busy office if you need silence; you need a quiet room to appreciate the "grace and poise" of the soundstage.
The Austrian Audio Hi-X60 is built for the professional environment where accuracy and isolation are non-negotiable. Its proprietary High Excursion technology drives 44mm dynamic drivers that deliver a linear frequency response from 5 Hz to 28 kHz. This is tuned specifically to simplify error detection during mixing, mastering, or recording. The closed-back design is crucial here; it prevents sound from escaping into the recording environment, which protects your microphone from bleed. If you are working in a live setting, such as front-of-house (FOH) applications, the high passive-noise suppression ensures you get a clear signal-to-noise ratio even amidst loud instruments.
Durability is woven into the DNA of this product. Austrian Audio emphasizes "Made in Austria Quality," utilizing metal hinges and a metal bow to guarantee maximum stability. Unlike many consumer headphones that crack under stress, the Hi-X60 is engineered to handle rough handling. A standout feature for long-term value is the replaceability of components. Both the ear pads and the headband pad are replaceable, extending the product's lifespan significantly. The cable is also detachable, with two included, so a frayed wire doesn't render the entire unit useless. For a laptop user who travels frequently, the foldable construction makes storage incredibly easy, fitting neatly into the provided carrying case.
Comfort is addressed through soft memory foam earpads that offer outstanding ventilation. This design choice keeps your ears cool even during marathon sessions, preventing the fatigue that often plagues users of tight, sealed headphones. The headband includes a smart cut-out to relieve pressure on the crown of the head, ensuring you can focus on your workflow without distraction. While the sound signature is balanced and detail-rich, the bass response is described as pleasantly understated, particularly at the extreme low end. This makes it excellent for critical listening where you don't want the bass to muddy the mids, though bass lovers seeking a thumping kick drum might find it too restrained compared to consumer-focused models.
• Best for battery-free, high-detail listening → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size (Planar Magnetic drivers offer superior speed and detail).
• Best for isolated, professional environments → Austrian Audio Hi-X60 (Closed-back design provides essential passive noise cancellation).
• Best for durability and repairability → Austrian Audio Hi-X60 (Replaceable ear pads, headband, and cables extend longevity).
• Best for aesthetic appeal and lightweight feel → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size (Sleek matte black finish and 372g weight).
• Best for laptop connectivity with external gear → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size (Requires an amp like the SuperMini for optimal performance).
• Best for portability and folding → Austrian Audio Hi-X60 (Foldable construction fits easily into a compact case).
• Best for long studio sessions → Austrian Audio Hi-X60 (Memory foam and ventilation prevent heat buildup).
• Best for wide frequency extension → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size (6 Hz to 75 kHz range exceeds the Hi-X60's 28 kHz limit).
In my opinion, I would buy the HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size if my goal was purely musical immersion and I had a compatible amplifier ready for my laptop. The sheer technical capability of the thinner diaphragm and the 75 kHz upper limit creates a soundscape that feels more alive and detailed than almost anything else in its class. However, for a general laptop user who needs a single pair of headphones that works anywhere—from a quiet home office to a noisy coffee shop—the Austrian Audio Hi-X60 is the smarter, more practical choice. Its closed-back isolation, foldable design, and ability to survive being tossed in a bag make it the superior companion for a mobile lifestyle. If you need clip-on earbuds for laptop use in a pinch, neither fits that description, but between these two full-size options, the Austrian Audio wins on versatility while the HIFIMAN wins on pure sonic fidelity.
The HIFIMAN Sundara excels at positional audio due to its wide frequency response and fast planar drivers, but its open design leaks sound and picks up background noise. For gaming in a shared space, the Austrian Audio's closed-back isolation is generally better for keeping sound contained and blocking distractions.
You can plug either into a laptop via the 3.5 mm jack, but the HIFIMAN Sundara will sound thin and weak without a dedicated amplifier like the SuperMini. The Austrian Audio Hi-X60 has lower impedance (25 ohms) and will play louder and clearer straight from a laptop, though it won't reach its full dynamic potential without a good source.
Yes, the Hi-X60 features replaceable ear pads and a replaceable headband pad, which allows for hygienic maintenance and extends the product's lifetime significantly compared to fixed-pad models.
