If you want a robust, open-back planar magnetic headphone designed for extended listening sessions on a larger frame, choose HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size; if you need highly customizable in-ear monitors with a focus on vocal clarity and a compact form factor, choose TANCHJIM Origin.
• HIFIMAN SUNDARA: Its biggest strength is the ultra-thin diaphragm technology that delivers a massive soundstage and incredible detail retrieval, but its trade-off is the lack of wireless connectivity and the requirement for a dedicated amplifier to truly shine.
• TANCHJIM Origin: Its biggest strength lies in its modular design with three interchangeable nozzles and a lightweight dynamic driver that offers exceptional value and portability, though it trades off the immersive, room-filling immersion of an over-ear design.
• Who it's for: The Sundara is the pick for the audiophile who prioritizes sonic purity and comfort for long studio or home sessions, while the Origin fits the listener who wants a versatile, travel-friendly setup with adjustable tuning.
The HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size is engineered for the listener who treats audio as a primary hobby rather than just background noise. At its core, this headset utilizes a newly developed diaphragm that is 80% thinner than previous generations. This isn't just a marketing buzzword; in practical terms, a thinner diaphragm moves faster and more accurately, resulting in a frequency response that stretches from a deep 6 Hz up to a crisp 75 kHz. If you are someone who listens to complex orchestral pieces or high-resolution jazz where instrument separation matters, this speed and detail retrieval will feel like a revelation compared to standard dynamic drivers.
Comfort is another critical pillar for this specific product, especially when considering those looking for headphones for big head users who often struggle with clamping force. The design features a hybrid headband with a weight-spreading strap that distributes pressure evenly across the top of the skull. Combined with the all-metal headband construction, which is built to withstand the rigors of daily use, the Sundara aims to be as durable as it is beautiful. The matte black finish gives it a sleek, fashion-conscious look that stands apart from the typical plastic-heavy aesthetic of many consumer electronics. For the person wearing these for hours at a desk or during long flights, the rounded earcup shape is designed to provide a secure seal without excessive pressure points.

However, this product is not for everyone. It is a wired device with a 32-ohm impedance and a sensitivity of 94 dB. While it can play loud enough with a powerful source, it shines brightest when paired with a dedicated amplifier, such as the slimline SuperMini mentioned in its technical context. If you are looking for a simple plug-and-play solution for your phone without an external amp, you might find it lacks the punch you expect. Furthermore, because it is an open-back design (implied by the "wide frequency response" and lack of isolation claims), it offers zero noise isolation. If you work in a noisy office or commute on a train, the outside world will bleed right into your music. This is a home and studio-centric tool, best suited for quiet environments where you can fully appreciate the "velvet glove over a marble fist" synergy between the amp and the driver.
The TANCHJIM Origin takes a completely different approach, focusing on the in-ear monitor (IEM) market with a heavy emphasis on customization and vocal performance. Instead of a large planar magnetic driver, it employs a 10mm DMT5 dual-magnetic double-cavity dynamic driver. This technology is designed to offer higher magnetic flux and lower distortion, aiming for a harmonic distortion figure of less than 0.056% at 94 dB. For the listener who prioritizes clear vocals and precise sound positioning, this low distortion rate ensures that the timbre remains faithful and the soundstage feels wide despite the small form factor.
What sets the Origin apart from almost any other IEM on the market is its modularity. The unit comes with three different resonance effect conduits: Standard, Dynamic, and Light. These can be unscrewed and swapped out easily due to a quick-disassembly thread structure. This means you aren't stuck with one sound signature forever. If you want more bass impact, you can switch to the Dynamic conduit; if you prefer a brighter, more detailed treble, the Light conduit offers a different resonance profile. This feature makes it incredibly versatile for different genres of music or even different listening environments. The ergonomic model design, derived from data collected on abundant ear shapes, suggests a deeper insertion depth and a scientific inclination angle that improves coupling with the ear canal, which is crucial for maintaining a good seal and preventing sound leakage.
This product is ideal for the traveler or the commuter who needs something portable but refuses to compromise on sound quality. It includes a high-purity 6N oxygen-free copper-plated silver wire with a Litz texture, ensuring flexibility and resistance to oxidation. The inclusion of multiple eartip sizes (S, M, L) in two types—one optimized for bass and one for treble—allows for a personalized fit that can reduce fatigue during long wear sessions. However, being an in-ear device, it naturally isolates sound differently than an over-ear headphone. While the venting functionality helps reduce pressure differences and fatigue, it does not offer the same physical barrier against external noise as a well-sealed closed-back over-ear cup. If you need absolute silence or are sensitive to the feeling of having something inside your ear canal, this might not be the first choice. But for the user seeking a balance of portability, durability, and tunable sound, the Origin offers a compelling package.
• Best for immersive soundstages and detail → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size. The planar magnetic driver and wide frequency response (6 Hz to 75 kHz) create a much wider, more open soundscape than the dynamic driver in the Origin.
• Best for portability and travel → TANCHJIM Origin. The in-ear form factor is significantly smaller and lighter, making it easy to carry anywhere without the bulk of over-ear cups.
• Best for adjustable sound signatures → TANCHJIM Origin. The ability to swap out three different nozzles allows you to physically change the tuning of the earphones to suit your mood or genre.
• Best for long-duration comfort on larger frames → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size. The weight-spreading strap and metal headband design are specifically noted for distributing pressure, which is often a pain point for those with bigger heads.
• Best for vocal-focused music → TANCHJIM Origin. The driver is explicitly tuned for "vocal enhanced" performance with low distortion, making voices sit perfectly in the mix.
• Best for home studio or quiet listening → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size. Its open nature requires a quiet environment to prevent sound leakage and ensure you hear the full fidelity.
• Best for users who want a single cable solution → TANCHJIM Origin. The included 6N silver-plated wire is flexible and durable, whereas the Sundara relies heavily on an external amplifier for optimal performance.
• Best for durability in urban settings → HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size. The all-metal headband is built to take the rigors of street life, offering a robust build quality.
In my opinion, if you are shopping for headphones for a big head and prioritize an immersive, high-fidelity experience where you can lose yourself in the music for hours, the HIFIMAN SUNDARA Over-Ear Full-Size is the superior choice. The combination of the ultra-thin diaphragm and the ergonomic, weight-spreading headband addresses the specific discomfort issues that larger-framed users often face with cheaper models. While the TANCHJIM Origin is a fantastic piece of engineering with its unique nozzle system, it simply cannot match the spatial presentation and tonal richness of the Sundara's planar magnetic architecture. I would buy the Sundara for my home listening setup because it offers a level of detail and comfort that transforms the act of listening into an event, provided I have the necessary amplifier to drive it properly.
Yes, the HIFIMAN SUNDARA features a weight-spreading strap and an all-metal headband designed to distribute pressure evenly, which is particularly beneficial for those with larger head sizes. The TANCHJIM Origin uses an ergonomic in-ear design based on extensive ear shape data, but it does not have a headband to adjust for head size.
Yes, the TANCHJIM Origin has a sensitivity and impedance (16 ohms) that allows it to perform well directly from most modern smartphones and portable players, unlike the Sundara which benefits significantly from a dedicated amplifier.
Yes, the Origin includes two types of earpieces (one for bass and one for treble) available in three sizes (S, M, L), allowing you to customize both the fit and the sound profile.
No, the Sundara is a wired headphone using a 3.5 mm jack connection. It relies on a wired connection to deliver its full planar magnetic performance and does not have built-in battery or wireless technology.
