If you want an open-back planar magnetic headphone with pure, low-distortion sound for long listening sessions at home, choose HIFIMAN HE400SE; if you need a hybrid in-ear monitor with powerful bass and spatial audio capabilities for mobile streaming and live music genres, choose HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO.
• HIFIMAN HE400SE: Offers exceptional clarity through stealth magnet technology and an open-back design that eliminates distortion, but requires a quiet environment due to zero noise isolation.
• HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO: Delivers a dynamic "live" experience with deep sub-bass and crisp vocals via its 2DD+2BA hybrid driver setup, making it ideal for commuting and active use.
• The HIFIMAN is for the audiophile seeking accuracy in a stationary setting, while the HiFiGo is the top pick for anyone looking for the best neckband-style mobility or in-ear performance for streaming on the go.
The HIFIMAN HE400SE is built for the listener who prioritizes sonic purity above all else. At its core lies a planar magnetic driver design where conductive layers cover nearly the entire diaphragm. This architecture fundamentally changes how sound is produced compared to conventional dynamic drivers. Instead of vibrating only specific areas, the whole diaphragm moves, resulting in significantly lower distortion. This is not just a technical specification; it translates to a soundstage that feels wide and accurate, allowing you to hear details in your favorite tracks that other headphones might blur together.
What sets this model apart specifically is the Stealth Magnet technology. Conventional magnets can create interference and turbulence that degrades the integrity of sound waves as they pass by. HIFIMAN has engineered a special shape for these magnets that makes them acoustically invisible. The sound waves pass through without hitting a barrier, ensuring the output remains pure and full-range. If you are using high-resolution audio files or a portable player with limited voltage, the high sensitivity of the HE400SE means you get rich, detailed sound without needing a bulky external amplifier.

Comfort is another critical factor for this product. The headband is adjustable and lightweight, designed to keep the ear cups cool even during extended periods of wear. However, the open-back design is a defining characteristic that dictates who should buy this. Because the earcups are open, there is no noise isolation. You will hear exactly what is happening in the room around you, and others will hear exactly what you are listening to. This makes the HE400SE perfect for a dedicated listening room, a home studio, or a quiet bedroom. It is not suitable for noisy environments like a subway, a busy office, or while traveling. If you need silence, this is not the tool for the job.
The HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO represents a different philosophy entirely, focusing on immersion and portability. This in-ear monitor is a collaboration between DUNU and a prominent Japanese audio channel, drawing inspiration from the traditional "Koto" instrument to create a unique "Japanese modern" aesthetic and sound signature. It is designed for the user who wants the energy of a live concert in their ears. The key here is the hybrid driver configuration: two dynamic drivers paired with two balanced armatures. This combination allows the 10mm biocellulose dynamic driver to handle deep sub-bass response while the smaller components manage the mid-range and highs with precision.
For those who stream music constantly, especially genres like EDM, Rock, Hip-Hop, ACG, and Pop, this pairing excels. The dual dynamic drivers provide overwhelming bass that hits hard, while the balanced armatures ensure that vocals remain crystal clear and sibilant-free. The tuning was validated through extensive listening sessions at major audio events, aiming to reproduce the shocking feeling of a live music scene. With a frequency range stretching from 5Hz to 40kHz, it captures nuances that standard consumer earbuds often miss. The included silver-plated OCC copper cable minimizes signal loss, ensuring that the transmission from your device to your ear is as pure as possible.
This product also features a Q-Lock Mini Plug System, offering both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced plugs. This versatility means you can connect to almost any player, smartphone, or DAC without worrying about compatibility. The inclusion of Dunu S&S eartips ensures a secure fit and excellent passive isolation, which is crucial for blocking out ambient noise when you are outside. Unlike the open-back nature of the HIFIMAN, the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO seals your ear canal, creating a private acoustic space. This makes it the superior choice for the best spatial audio earphones for streaming, as the isolation helps maintain focus on the mix regardless of your surroundings.
• Best for battery life → Neither product uses a battery as they are wired, but the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO offers greater portability for mobile devices without needing a large case.
• Best for soundstage width → HIFIMAN HE400SE wins easily due to its open-back planar magnetic design which creates a natural, wide acoustic field.
• Best for bass impact → HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO takes this category with its 10mm biocellulose dynamic driver delivering deep sub-bass punch.
• Best for noise isolation → HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO provides a seal that blocks out the world, whereas the HIFIMAN leaks sound in both directions.
• Best for vocal clarity → Both excel, but the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO uses precision-tuned balanced armatures specifically highlighted for sibilant-free vocals in pop and ACG.
• Best for warm weather comfort → HIFIMAN HE400SE is explicitly designed with a cooling headband for hot conditions, though it lacks the breathability of closed-back in-ears.
• Best for connectivity flexibility → HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO includes both 3.5mm and 4.4mm balanced options, offering more future-proofing for high-end players.
• Best for low-voltage sources → HIFIMAN HE400SE is optimized for high sensitivity (91dB), making it easy to drive directly from portable players without extra amplification.
I would choose the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO if my primary goal is finding the best neckband headphones for streaming or simply having a versatile pair of in-ears for daily life. The hybrid driver setup provides a level of engagement and bass response that fits the modern streaming lifestyle perfectly. While the HIFIMAN HE400SE is an incredible piece of engineering for static listening, the practicality of the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO—combined with its ability to isolate noise and deliver a "live" feel—makes it the more adaptable tool for most people. In my opinion, for streaming content across various environments, the isolation and driver balance of the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO offer the better overall value and listening experience.
The HIFIMAN HE400SE offers an expansive soundstage great for positional audio in a quiet room, while the HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO provides strong bass and isolation for immersive gaming on the go, though neither has a built-in microphone listed.
Yes, the included interchangeable 3.5mm plug works with most laptops, and the 4.4mm balanced plug is compatible with high-end portable audio players or desktop DACs.
No, its high sensitivity of 91dB makes it a perfect match for low-voltage sources, meaning it does not require a bulky amplifier to produce rich, full-range sound.
The HiFiGo DUNU x KOTO provides excellent passive noise isolation due to its in-ear design and included eartips, whereas the HIFIMAN HE400SE is an open-back model with no noise control features.
