My name is Minh Hieu Nguyen (or Nguyễn Minh Hiếu in Vietnamese), and you can call me Hieu. I was born and raised in Phú Thọ, a northern province of Việt Nam renowned for the Worship of the Hùng Kings and Xoan singing. I completed my undergraduate education in Việt Nam before moving to Ireland and the UK for my postgraduate studies. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, cooking traditional food, and spending time with family and friends.
I am an applied linguist with research interests in Corpus Linguistics, Critical Discourse Studies, and Translation Studies.
My work primarily involves the use of corpus linguistic methods to examine language patterns across different genres, author groups, and linguacultural contexts. I am particularly interested in the lexico-grammatical features of discourse, such as grammatical stance, metadiscourse markers, and formulaic expressions, that people use to achieve their communicative purposes. These insights can have implications for ESP teachers and learners, and help people avoid potential misunderstandings in diverse communication settings.
Moreover, I am intrigued by how Vietnamese media outlets employ multimodal resources, including texts and images, to discursively represent marginalised social actors and social issues. By revealing how such representations reinforce ideologies and power relations, my research aims to promote more responsible media practices and enhance public awareness of social problems. The findings can potentially contribute to a better society where vulnerable voices are heard and societal issues receive the attention they deserve.
Finally, drawing on my proven track record as a translator and localisation professional, I also conduct research on English–Vietnamese translations. From a corpus-based perspective, I am interested in translator style, translational language, and translation techniques used to render taboo expressions, culture-specific terms, and neologisms. This research area can benefit translators, localisation teams, and developers of NLP or machine translation systems that deal with the Vietnamese language and culture.
