How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want a complete personal-audio package built around HiBy's own headphone amp and HiFi earphones, choose HiBy W3; if you need a USB-C transmitter that pushes aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LE Audio out to the wireless earbuds you already own, choose Generic LE Audio USB.
• HiBy W3's biggest strength: it is a matched two-piece kit — the W3 II headphone amp plus the HiBy Yves HiFi earphones — so you get a wired listening chain designed to work together out of the box.
• HiBy W3's biggest trade-off: it is a wired, earphone-plus-amp setup, not a wireless transmitter, so it will not turn an existing pair of Bluetooth earbuds into an aptX HD pair.
• Generic LE Audio USB's biggest strength: codec flexibility. It supports aptX, aptX HD, aptX LL and multiple audible formats, plus LE Audio broadcasting and Bluetooth 5.4 with up to 10 m of working distance.
• Generic LE Audio USB's biggest trade-off: it is a transmitter dongle only. No earphones, no amp, no battery — you supply the headphones and the USB-C host.
• Pick HiBy W3 if you want one purchase that covers both amplification and the earphones themselves.
• Pick Generic LE Audio USB if you already like your earbuds or headphones and just want to feed them a better wireless signal from a laptop or USB-C device.
The HiBy W3 is a bundle, and that is the whole point. HiBy pairs the W3 II headphone amp with the HiBy Yves HiFi earphones, so the two halves of the chain are chosen by the same company rather than pieced together by you. For someone who wants to stop guessing which amp drives which earphone, that removes a step. You plug in, and the hardware is already matched.
This is a wired-first product, and it appeals to a specific listener: the person who cares about the analog end of the chain more than the wireless end. If your music lives on a laptop, a portable player or a phone with a dongle-friendly output, the W3 II amp gives that signal somewhere better to go, and the Yves earphones give it something better to drive. It is a setup for someone who thinks about amplification as part of the sound, not as an afterthought.
Generic LE Audio USB: Who It's For
This is a transmitter, and it is refreshingly single-minded about it. The Generic LE Audio USB is a USB-C dongle running a Bluetooth 5.4 chip, and its job is to take audio from a host device and send it wirelessly to headphones or earbuds with the best codec available. It lists support for APTX, APTXHD, APTX LL and multiple audible formats — which, for anyone hunting aptx hd earbuds, is the headline feature. The dongle is what makes aptX HD possible on the receiving end; the earbuds still have to support it.
The LE Audio side is the second half of the pitch. In LE Audio mode the transmitter is designed for low latency and a clean transmitting experience, which matters for video and gaming where a laggy signal is immediately obvious. It also supports broadcasting, meaning multiple devices can listen to the same stream at once — genuinely useful if two people want to watch a movie on one laptop with separate headphones. Bluetooth 5.4 with a maximum working distance of up to 10 meters gives you room to move around a normal room without dropping out.
Who should buy it? The person with a USB-C laptop, tablet or phone and a decent pair of wireless headphones or earbuds who wants that hardware to sound as good as it can. It is also the better pick for shared listening and for anyone who cares about latency. Who should skip it? Anyone who wants earphones included, or who wants amplification rather than transmission. There is no battery here, no plug type, and the connector is USB 2.0 — so it is a host-powered accessory, not a standalone player. It also carries a manufacturer warranty of 90 days, which is worth knowing before you commit.
• Best for aptX HD earbuds → Generic LE Audio USB. APTXHD is explicitly in its supported codec list. The HiBy W3 does not transmit wirelessly at all, so it cannot deliver aptX HD to anything.
• Best for a complete wired listening setup → HiBy W3. Amp plus earphones in one purchase, matched by the same brand.
• Best for upgrading headphones you already own → Generic LE Audio USB. It sends to your existing wireless gear instead of replacing it.
• Best for low-latency video and gaming → Generic LE Audio USB. LE Audio mode is built around low latency transmitting.
• Best for listening together → Generic LE Audio USB. Broadcasting lets multiple devices listen to the same source simultaneously.
• Best for range and connection stability → Generic LE Audio USB. Bluetooth 5.4 with up to 10 m working distance.
• Best for someone who wants amplification in the chain → HiBy W3. That is exactly what the W3 II headphone amp is for.
• Best for a no-battery, host-powered accessory → Generic LE Audio USB. No plug type and no battery to manage; it draws from the USB-C host.
In my opinion, these two products barely compete — they solve different problems, and the choice comes down to which problem is yours. If your goal is to get aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LE Audio out to wireless earbuds or headphones you already like, I would buy the Generic LE Audio USB. Its codec list, Bluetooth 5.4 chip, 10 m range, broadcasting support and low-latency LE Audio mode are aimed squarely at that job, and nothing about the HiBy W3 does it. I would only choose the HiBy W3 if I specifically wanted a wired amp-and-earphone kit from a single brand and had no interest in transmitting. For most people shopping the aptx hd earbuds angle, the dongle is the answer.
which earbuds support aptx hd
That depends on the earbuds, not the transmitter. The Generic LE Audio USB supports APTXHD on the sending side, so it can transmit aptX HD — but the earbuds or headphones on the receiving end must also support the codec for it to actually be used. Check your earbuds' codec list before assuming they qualify.
Do I need a transmitter to get aptX HD on my earbuds?
The Generic LE Audio USB is a wireless transmitter: Bluetooth 5.4, up to 10 m working distance, LE Audio low-latency mode and broadcasting to multiple devices. The HiBy W3 is a wired kit — a headphone amp plus HiBy Yves HiFi earphones. One sends audio over the air; the other improves the wired chain.
I do not quote prices here, since they change — use the price button on this page to check the current figure on Amazon. On features alone, value depends on what you own: the dongle is the better value if you already have good wireless earbuds, while the HiBy W3 makes more sense if you need the earphones and amp together.
The Generic LE Audio USB lists a manufacturer warranty of 90 days. The HiBy W3 data sheet does not list a warranty term, so I cannot compare them on that point — treat the dongle's 90-day coverage as the only stated figure between the two.
