Before you fill out the application - be sure to read ALL the information in the drop down lists below to make sure you qualify and are prepared. You must live WITHIN 15 MILES of Williamsburg, VA.
1) Provide a safe, clean, and caring environment and monitor for physical and mental wellbeing
2) Provide food, water, toys/enrichment, exercise, and a comfortable space inside your home
3) Agree that the dog wear an ID tag on its collar at all times when outside the home
4) Agree the dog will never be left unattended outside or with young children
5) Transport to/from offsite adoption events, adoption meet and greets, and vet appointments
6) Actively engage with potential adopters and the rescue
7) Administer prescribed medicine as directed
8) If the situation does not work out, you agree to transport the foster dog back to Homes Fur Hounds
1) Be 21 years of age or older
2) Have substantial experience with dogs and exposure and patience with varied dog behaviors
3) Live in a residence that allows pets
4) Have reliable transportation to go to vet appointments and adoption events in Williamsburg, VA
6) Agree to and sign a foster waiver
7) Agree to a background and home check
8) Agree to work with potential adopters and handle organization paperwork
9) Agree that they or participating adult family member are home a substantial part of the day
10) Confirm that all other pets in the home are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and typically get along with other dogs
11) Live within 15 miles of Williamsburg, VA
12) Have personal health insurance
13) Have never been accused of or convicted of a crime against an animal (signature required on legal form)
Please note: Homes Fur Hounds cannot sign off on court-ordered community service hours for fostering. Community service is supposed to be supervised work, and fostering is unsupervised, since it takes place in your home.
Bowls, soft place to sleep (old blankets/towels work well), baby gates (if needed), a properly sized crate, toys, etc. Please let us know what you have and don't so we can prepare.
Securing all harmful chemicals and cleaning supplies where the dog cannot access them.
Make sure that all trash cans are covered or latched and keep them inside a closet. (Don't forget the bathroom trash bins)
Keep the toilet lids closed.
Keep both people and pet food out of reach and off all counter tops.
Move houseplants or secure them. Some dogs like to play with them and may knock them over. Some can be poisonous.
Make sure that aquariums or cages that house small animals, like hamsters, are securely out of reach of your foster dog.
Remove medications, lotions or cosmetics from accessible surfaces.
Move and secure all electrical and phone wires out of reach. Dogs may chew on or get tangled in them.
Pick up any clothing items that have buttons or strings and children's toys which can be harmful to your foster dog if consumed.
Relocate knickknacks or valuables that your foster dog could knock down.
Remove all current dog toys until you are sure there are no jealousy or resource protection issues.
Secure your cat litter box out of reach of your foster.
