As monospaced fonts were customary on typewriters, Hermes undoubtedly keeps certain features from this original parameter. Although, Hermes has been adapted proportionally for improved texture and legibility. Its rounded ends give it a certain warmth while its reminiscent fixed-width and geometrical aspect simultaneously give it a more rational and mathematical edge. Intended to work well in long texts and in small sizes, the spacing has intentionally been widened, which is also helpful in web usages.

Another week, another Molly Middleton obsession - Hermes. I love the brand and have for most of my life. My father always wore an Hermes tie and I loved them as a little girl because all of the playful patterns. I think I am attracted to the bold colors and the refinement of the brand. Everything they produce seems to be refined, timeless and distinctly luxury. Known for the Birkin and Kelly bags as well as the colorful scarves, Hermes is an iconic brand.

Hermes is most known for its leather and scarves but they also have incredible tableware. I found this post covering a display of Hermes 'Voyage en Ikat' china and I loved the way the collection was layered - pattern on top of pattern, not to mention the vivid colors, so I had to include it here. The ikat pattern combines beautifully with the rich purple and blue table and also with the gold flatware. Hermes, across the board, is not afraid of color - and that's one if the main reasons I love the brand. These photos above are another example of how Hermes manages to be bold while still appearing incredibly luxe and dynamic.

The font appearing on the Hermes logo is Memphis Bold, a bold variation of the popular Memphis typeface.

Memphis is a geometric slab-serif typeface designed by Dr. Rudolf Wolf and initially released by the Stempel Type Foundry in 1929. The font is published by Linotype GmbH.

Memphis was developed to mimic the designs of German geometric sans-serifs which were reasonably popular around the same period. The typeface looks particularly similar to Futura.

However, Wolf adapted Memphis to the slab-serif structure. This was in an apparent effort to make the typeface stand out from most Germanic geometric sans-serifs it was modeled after.

Not long ago I fell in love with the design of Hermes 3000 typewriter "Techno" font (there are three slightly different styles under this name: "Tecnho Pica" [12pt], "Techno Special" [10pt?] and "Techno Elite" [10pt]).

I looked for some digital revivals of this wonderful typeface, but I could not find one that really satisfied me. There are indeed some digital interpretation of Hermes 3000 "Techno" font, but to my eyes there was always something missing.

I think that closest digital font to the Techno typeface is "Magda", by Cornel Windlin. It is a really beautiful typeface, but I feel like it is a little too fuzzy. And, of course, it does not come for free.

My original idea was to create a font that had exactly the same character set of a Hermes 3000 equipped with the "Techno" font. But as soon as I started working on the project, I understood that there was not just one character set: character sets changed depending on the year in which the typewriters were produced and on the target market. 2351a5e196
