What is Fuwa Moku Factory?
Fuwa Moku Factory is a casual game where fuzzy characters must be sorted and shipped off. The Japanese words "fuwa" and "moku" roughly translate to "fluffy" and "fuzzy." Fuwa Moku Factory was created for the RITxKCG 2025 game jam in Kyoto, Japan. As a part of the Japanese Game Industry study abroad program, I participated in a game jam where we teamed up with students from Kyoto Computer Gakuin to create a game in two days. The theme for the game jam was "kawaii," which brought these words to mind for our Japanese teammates. We wanted to make a game that was casual so that players could relax and enjoy the aesthetic and art. My role was primarily gameplay programming and scripting, as well as designing the architecture for game.
The biggest challenges of this project were the time constraints and communication difficulties. We had only two days to create this game, which meant is was important to spend time wisely and keep our scope small so that we could have a working prototype. Communication was difficult because the Japanese students did not speak any English, which meant we had to translate messages and communicate through text. This was the most obstructive at the end of the jam, when everybody was scrambling to finish up their games.
