The story focuses on Mr. Peterson's children as they play hide and seek. One day, Theodore and Diane didn't come home for dinner, causing Aaron and Mya to become confused and worried. When Theodore does eventually come home, the kids find out that their mother has died (in a car crash with a pizza truck). Because of the loss, Aaron starts acting out and breaking things. Mya goes to comfort him and they play another game. While they are playing, Aaron trips Mya and repeatedly shoots her with the rifle. Theodore calls them to dinner and Aaron steals Mya's spoon and starts being mean to her. This causes Theodore to get mad and insist that Aaron leave the dinner table. Again in the bedroom, Aaron steals Mya's doll and carries it up to the roof. Mya retrieves the doll, but Aaron accidentally knocks her off the roof and she falls. The last scene in the game is Theodore digging Mya's grave.

Mya walks into the nursery and sees Aaron huddled under a blanket trying to sleep. Mya tries to take away his doll, but Aaron decided to play hide-and-seek again, but this time his sister will drive. Mya decided to accept this. A few minutes later, Mya climbs to the roof of her house, where she finds her doll. Aaron comes up behind her and knocks off her doll. Due to his loss of control, Aaron accidentally pushes Mya and she flies down, crashing to death. Theodore finds his daughter's corpse and bury it it in the backyard of the house.

Hide and Seek aims to expand on the story of the first game by giving players a look into the events that led up to it. The Neighbor has just learned that his wife has been killed in an accident and has to raise his two children on his own. The Son and Daughter named Aaron and Mya, decide to play a game to take their mind off of the grief. The game is hide and seek, which starts out as harmless fun but soon takes a dark and peculiar turn with the brother becoming more aggressive towards his little sister.

For me, this is a bit confusing as whilst the game is billed as a game of hide and seek, the reality is it actually comes across as a hide and explore based experience, with an overbearing antagonist hot on your trail, waiting for even the slightest slip up.

A prequel to Hello Neighbor, titled Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek, was announced during PAX West in August 2018, and released on December 7, 2018, on the same platforms as the original game, including non-Microsoft systems.[27] Set several years before the events of the original game, Hide & Seek deals with the events in Mr. Peterson's life that caused him to become a recluse.[28] The gameplay is similar to that of Hello Neighbor, but instead of Nicky, the player controls Mr. Peterson's daughter Mya as she plays hide-and-seek with her brother, Aaron (who takes the place of the neighbor), in various fictitious scenarios. The story is told through cutscenes in-between levels, which reveal that the children's mother dies in a car crash sometime during the events of the game. In his grief, Aaron later pushes Mya off the roof of the house, resulting in her accidental death.
