Academic and Financial Copy-Editor
mhelfield@gmail.com
My story is simple: I have made the transition from academia (ancient history, classics) to the world of academic and financial editing. I am a member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES), and have participated in seminars organized by Editors Canada.
My mission is simple: I want to help you with your text. Whether you need a light, medium, or a heavy copy-edit, I am here to serve. I love my work, and I know you will love what I can bring to your manuscript.
Don't be shy. I'd love to hear from you!
Here are a few volumes I have had the pleasure of working on (in no particular order):
Editorial Philosophy
I like to keep things simple. Of course, things can sometimes be complex, but my aim is to produce clarity. I imagine myself in the role of advisor. I make it a priority to communicate with clients in a timely manner and in a supportive tone. There are always options when it comes to editing. And lucidity does not always come easily. In my view, as long as a text's underlying logic is consistent (e.g. grammar, style, convention) and can therefore be reconstructed by the reader, the text is on solid ground.
Sample Edit
It would be my pleasure to provide a sample edit of a reasonable length so as to ensure you are comfortable (and satisfied!) with my work. As a rule, I would prefer to briefly query a word, phrase, or larger issue that ends up not needing any adjustment over potentially letting a mistake or an unwanted stylistic choice pass into publication. In short: "When in doubt, ask!"
I also determine my fee by being able to evaluate each ms. on its own terms. As a rule, I charge an hourly rate by the level of editing required and the number of graphic and tabular elements that have to be looked at.
Here are a few more volumes that I have worked on:
CV/Resume: Email me for an up-to-date CV in pdf format. It would be my pleasure to send you one!
