The Hektoen Institute of Medicine, with funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health, has created an Infection Prevention and Control training program to support long-term care Infection Preventionists (IPs) in Illinois.
In May of 2024, we introduced three different levels of Infection Prevention and Control courses tailored to support novice, proficient, and advanced IPs. All interested participants were asked to complete a self-assessment to determine what course level they would benefit most from. Below is a brief explanation of the different levels that are determined by the self-assessment:
Novice: The novice IP has very limited knowledge, skills, experience, and basis in which to have situational awareness in infection prevention and control (IPC) and epidemiology. They must rely on rules and concepts to guide their practice and begin to develop their knowledge/skills in the core competencies.
Proficient: The proficient IP can demonstrate proficient knowledge of the core competencies of infection prevention and control. They are able to move beyond rule-based thinking to identify common trends that need to be addressed to ensure patient safety and use past experiences to shape future thinking about a situation.
Advanced: The advanced IP consistently and reliably demonstrates professional expertise (and at times very advanced levels of mastery) in the IPC core competencies and future-oriented competency domains. The advanced IP shares their knowledge and skills through mentoring, research, publication, collaboration, leadership, and educating other IPs. The advanced IP is able to analyze infection prevention and control data and information more rapidly than any other stage and guide future decisions based on experience and perceptual acuity to achieve defined outcomes.
These courses will be conducted throughout the state to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel as an infection preventionist. All the courses will be offered in person over the length of two days to comprehensively cover all aspects of an infection prevention and control program at the designated knowledge level. We also plan to offer this course regionally to best accommodate IPs across the state.
