Welcome to Byoung-ick Cho’s High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) Group.
We investigate extreme states of matter with energy densities exceeding 10¹¹ J/m³, using ultrafast high-power lasers and X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) to access atomic-scale dynamics on femtosecond and shorter timescales.
Our research covers warm dense matter, intense laser–plasma interactions, plasma atomic physics, and X-ray science. We combine state-of-the-art experiments with advanced simulation tools and machine learning techniques to create and probe high energy density conditions. By exploring how matter behaves and interacts with photons and particles in these regimes, we aim to advance fusion science, astrophysics, materials research, and imaging technologies.
