Demi Lovato is opening up about the grim and painful realities of suffering from addiction and mental health conditions. In a trailer for her new YouTube docu-series, released Wednesday, Lovato revealed that the overdose she experienced in 2018 caused her to have three strokes and a heart attack.

Wearing a shiny red pantsuit, the Disney Channel alum then sang to the crowd, as seen in video circulating on social media, "So I'm putting my defenses up / 'Cause I don't wanna fall in love / If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack."

An attendee corroborated the singer's explanation, affirming that Lovato had shared her reasoning for selecting the song before her performance. Notably, online users pointed out Lovato's personal connection to heart issues, recounting their own heart attack following a 2018 overdose, as revealed in their documentary Dancing with the Devil.

ET has learned that, following Lovato's heart attack and near-death experience, for a few years, she thought she would not be able to sing "Heart Attack." Lovato explained that she reclaimed the song, and told the crowd at the event as much before she started singing the track.

In the nearly three-minute preview of her documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, the singer reveals that she had multiple strokes and a heart attack when she was in the hospital after her overdose. The trailer shows Demi partying with friends, and shows those close to her tearfully reflecting on the night of the overdose, saying they didn't know if she would survive.

Demi Lovato publicly revealed that she once suffered a heart attack herself after a drug overdose. Now, due to the moment going viral online, Lovato's team have shared a statement to EW about the performance, revealing that she had actually discussed her reasons for choosing the song.

"I had three strokes, I had a heart attack, I suffered brain damage from the strokes," Lovato said. "I can't drive anymore. I have blind spots in my vision, so sometimes when I go to pour a glass of water, I'll miss the cup because I can't see it anymore. I had pneumonia because I asphyxiated and I had multiple organ failure." If she had been taken to the hospital five to ten minutes later than she was, she would have died.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Demi opened the song by saying how she thought she "wouldn't be able to perform that song again" after she had a heart attack following her drug overdose in 2018. She reportedly said the song has a new meaning for her now, which is why she chose to perform it that night.

"I had three strokes. I had a heart attack. My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes," she said, in an excerpt of the "Dancing with the Devil" documentary to be released on YouTube on March 23. 0852c4b9a8
