When working with a mother who would like breastfeeding assistance, refer to the 'Breastfeeding Express Sheet' down below (Which is also available in Spanish!)
Please ensure you are asking your client what type of breastfeeding resources they are searching for. If your client is interested in obtaining a breast pump, see the breast pump section. If your client would like to sign up for classes about breastfeeding, refer to the support section. If they would like general education, refer to the general breastfeeding education section.
Additionally, please be aware that not all women are able to breastfeed, even if they want to. Be aware of this, and be sensitive!
Breastfeeding Rights
If your client is breastfeeding / breast pumping and feels nervous to do so in public or when they go back to work, please inform them that they have rights in doing so and it may be unlawful for anyone to prevent them from breastfeeding or pumping. Refer to these resources below and share them with your client to empower them!
Guide for Advocates
If your client is looking for quick information regarding an overview of breastfeeding education, its benefits, and a limited amount of information about support groups in the area, provide them with the Breastfeeding Express Sheet.
If your client prefers more in-depth information, please provide them with each resource below.
The License-to-breastfeed resource includes a printout of wallet-sized cards your client can carry to show proof of breastfeeding rights. This includes allowing mothers and their child to breastfeed in public and allowing your client to have a break at work in order to pump.
Remember we are not experts about breastfeeding. Do not attempt to answer questions about which pump a client should buy. Simply refer them to the resource and if they have more quesitons, invite them to reach out to their healthcare provider for more detailed information.
Insurance Coverage of Pumps
Before looking to purchase or rent a breast pump for your client, please inform them that their insurance will most likely cover the cost of obtaining a pump because of the Affordable Care Act (2010).
