What is a Hackathon?

“A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is a design sprint-like event in which computer scientists and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and others, often including subject-matter-experts, collaborate intensively on software or hardware projects. The goal of a hackathon is to create usable software or hardware with the goal of creating a functioning product by the end of the event. Hackathons tend to have a specific focus, which can include the programming language used, the operating system, an application, an API, or the subject and the demographic group of the programmers. In other cases, there is no restriction on the type of software being created.” [1]

In relation to the collaboration between TU Dublin, AWS in Communities and Tallaght University Hospital, the focus of this event will be to try and address problems and design workable solutions for context-specific issues as identified by Tallaght University Hospital and their clinicians.

What is involved?

The 2023 Hackathon is a two-day event (schedule below) that aims to provide solutions to real clinical problems, which have been defined by Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) Clinicians. Over the two days, you will experience keynote's and technical presentation's providing you with all of the requirements and skills needed to develop the prototypes and take part in the hackathon. The end goal is a presentation with a proposal to solve the clinician-defined problems, with some level of prototyping. completed. AWS and TUH Clinicians will be part of the judging panel.

Some noteworthy points:

This is also an opportunity to possibly continue the clinician-defined problem as a 4th-year project.
Food and refreshments are provided
Prizes for the top-ranking teams
Excellent opportunity for CV experience
Prior to the event, the clinician's problems will be released
The Hackathon will take place on the Tallaght campus

The 2023 Hackathon is open to teams of students from 3-4 from all three TU Dublin campus locations. If you do not have a team but would like to participate please register as a single student and we will try to create the teams if we have enough individual applications!
