There have been others who were reluctant as well. But Peter seems to be a great picture of the average believer, in that he seems to have frequently forgotten his calling: Jesus kept having to call him again! The rest of the disciples had the same issue, to varying degrees, but Peter seems to have been a prime offender, and the ringleader, of sorts.

Jesus has called every single believer (Romans 8:28-30) and He still is pleading, If you have any feeling for me at all, get on with the job! Every one of you knows what the job is: not every one of you knows how you can fit in to that job. We have among us some people who are gifted soulwinners. That is marvelous! We have people among us who are gifted prayer-warriors! That is also a wonderful thing!

I still am called to share the good news of salvation with anyone who will listen. Evangelism is nothing more or less than one beggar telling another beggar where to find free food! I can do that! If they refuse it, at least they will know where to find it, if they later change their minds. (This does require that I actually know where it is, of course! If I give incorrect, or incomplete information, they will not be able to claim the living bread and living water that Jesus offers.) With practice, I can be more effective! But I still have the job, regardless of how I feel about it.

Now I love the fact that Miles and Peter are both actively superheroes and working together. Like many other people have said Peter doesn't need to die for Miles to be a superhero. But something that has bugged me in both this game and the comics (Where Miles and Peter both exist) is that Miles is also called Spider-man by everyone in NYC. Why has no one given him his own superhero name?

According to the Gospel of Luke, the miraculous catch of fish preceded the calling of Peter. This event at the Lake of Galilee gives us an answer to two questions. What does acting in faith mean? And what is the fruit of an act of faith? The evangelist tells us the following: At the Lake of Galilee Jesus taught the people from the boat belonging to Simon Peter. After his discourse He said to Simon: "Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch. And Simon answered, 'Master, we have toiled all the night and took nothing!'" (Luke 5:4b-5a). Peter, who had years of experience with fishing, faced a dilemma, a challenge. What to do with this instruction of Jesus? A carpenter gave an experienced fisherman a command that is totally at odds with his professional experience. During the night there was a much greater prospect of a good catch. If one did not catch anything during the night, the chances of a good catch during the day even smaller. Moreover, Peter was dead tired after a night of fruitless work. On the other hand, he admired Jesus. He had heard his impressive sermon in Capharnaum (Luke 4:31-32) and he had been witness to the miraculous healing of his mother-in-law and of other sick and possessed people (Luke 4:33-41).

Luke tells us how such acts of faith are richly rewarded. "And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish, and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink." (Luke 5:6-7). When the Lord does something, He doesn't do it half-way. Peter and the other apostles could experience the joy and astonishment which everyone has who is willing to do acts of faith. All expectations had been exceeded. The nets started to break and the boats almost sank under the load. As the best teacher and exceptional knower of the human heart, Jesus knew how to best deal with the fisherman from Galilee. The overflowing net made a deep impression on Peter. "For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken..." (Luke 5:9). The Lord makes his divine power clear to Peter in a new and unexpected way. Despite the apparently senseless casting of the nets, Peter's act of faith was richly rewarded.

A few months ago, I was on a run while listening to a podcast in which they mentioned the then-up-and-coming and now-behemoth Spider-Man: No Way Home. The discussion caused the name “Peter Parker” to get lodged into my brain, which is a thing that happens a lot when I’m running and listening to stuff. I’ll be trotting along and then every step will be “Watermelon” (trot) “Sugar” (trot) or “Jeremy” (trot) “Sisto” (trot), even after the people in my ears have long since moved on. Anyway, that day it was “Peter” (trot) “Parker” (trot).

Two is a coincidence and three's a trend, but reader, it doesn’t stop there. I remembered soon after watching The Power of the Dog that Dunst’s costar in Wimbledon, Paul Bettany, plays a character named Peter! Naturally, she says “Peter” a lot in that movie. At this point, I took my growing obsession to Google where I was blessed to find a whole dang video called, “How Many Times Does Kirsten Dunst Say 'Peter' In Movies?”

This, as far as I can tell, is pretty much the only thing on the whole internet tracking this phenomena, which the narrator rightly calls “A very specific coincidence called ‘Peter.’” It is a deep, deep dive, and includes way more connections between Dunst and the name Peter than I would personally deem noteworthy. That said, if you have 17 minutes and have made it this far in this blog, consider clicking. Highlights include every time Kiki says “Peter” in Jumanji, the Spider-Man movies, and Wimbledon. What a thrill!

If you don’t have 17 minutes, here is the gist with some updated additions, as the video is now two-plus years old: Kirsten Dunst has 86 acting credits on IMDB and of those credits, a notable number of those projects include characters named Peter, from The Bonfire of the Vanities to ER to The Virgin Suicides to Deeply (that one is technically “Peat”) to Get Over It. Not only that, this woman has said the word “Peter” on screen over 50 times. That’s a lot of Peters for one little woman (unfortunately there are no characters in the iconic 1994 film Little Women named Peter).

So what gives?? Is Peter simply a common character name like Jack, Sarah, or “Doctor”? Is it just a common name in general? Well, yes, and yes, and no. I found one site that semi-scientifically determined that Peter is indeed among the most common names in movies and according to the U.S. Social Security Administration, the name Peter ranks 214 in popularity among boys as of 2020, though overall, it has been in a state of steady decline since its peak popularity in the 1940s and 50s. It stands to reason that many of the people writing the screenplays of Dunst’s earlier works would be a product of that era, but it’s still a notable phenomenon for a single actress to be so deeply tied to one man’s name, right? What is it about her, or the projects she’s drawn to, that would result in such a weird case of serendipity??

But why did Paul call Peter, Cephas (Galatians 2:7-14, I Cor. 1:11-13, I Cor. 3:21, I Cor. 9:5 and I Cor. 15:5)? In some occasions he also calls him as Peter. When I asked my mom, she said Paul was rebuking Peter in the name Cephas. Is this true? Or is calling Peter as Cephas normal?

11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. 14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

John 1:42 (KJV) 42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

St. Paul might have used kepha to emphasize St. Peter's role (as his name signifies) as the Rock or leader of the Church (such as emphasizing that he had to even rebuke the 'Rock' of the Church, when it was called for).

We see that Jesus, when He first called Peter (not later in His ministry is he given the new name, as is a common misconception) to be His disciple, gave him a new name. As we know from Scripture, this always signifies a new role or significance for the person: e.g. Abram (high father) to Abraham (father of many).

He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas [still a Greek transliteration of Aramaic Kepha], which is interpreted Peter [i.e. which in the Greek in which this is written, is Petros].

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Helcias, and I will clothe him with thy robe, and will strengthen him with thy girdle, and will give thy power into his hand: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Juda. And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder: and he shall open, and none shall shut: and he shall shut, and none shall open. And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father.

Let me start by saying that in v6-9 Peter James and John recognises Paul's gift and anointing in reaching out to the Gentiles. In other words they recognize that Salvation through the Gospel is for gentiles too. e24fc04721
