OK, I would have expected a product like that to work. Remember that when the HDMI is converted to component, you now have an analog signal, not digital. The DVI connection remains in the digital realm, so what's likely happening there is the Roku is sending a 1080p signal and the TV can't process it. The analog/component connection should not have that issue, but for whatever reason the TV isn't processing it. And my guess is it's the TV's issue, not the converter.

I was able to find a manual online, and it confirmed what I feared. The DVI connection only supports 1080i and 480p, and the Roku doesn't support either resolution. Why the component converter isn't working I can't say. But my guess is it can't properly convert the Roku signal correctly.

hey david, i had the same problem when trying to connect an HDMI only cable box to an old projection tv. i ended up not being able to use the tv after going through 2 hdmi to component converters. i did get it to work on another old tube tv at one point. but i am trying to do what you're doing now. i have a roku express+ that i have connected to a very old tv using just AV out, but the picture quality is not great. it has 1080i capability. i just tried using the 2 converters in this case, but actually got the same results you did too. i might play around a little more to see if i can get it to work. i'll let you know if i do. i hope you'll post if you get yours to work or another solution.

The only Rokus I see with component came out in 2009 and 2010 and they were last updated to Roku OS 3.1. (12 is the current version.) I would not recommend bothering to find one of these. They probably do very little if anything today.

I've been using the HD component cables that come with the Xbox for awhile now on 1080p, and to me it looks pretty darn good. Though I've been hearing that running it through an HDMI cable makes it world's better, but it truly looks pretty fine to me as it is. Are they exaggerating, or am I just not seeing the light?

I recently received a modded original xbox. I only have the composite cables. I was thinking about picking up either component or HDMI. Is there any benefit to one over the other? Is HDMI overkill and component is fine? I have seen horror stories of cheap knock offs that do not really work. Which ones should I get?

Okay, so, here's the setup, I'm doing a whole area for my retro PC gaming but I also want to have a TV there hooked up to a small PC for Kodi just so I can watch TV there while tinking or playing stuff too. An easy option is to just get a small HDTV or even a monitor with speakers, but I was thinking of putting my 21" Sony Trinitron TV there which has component inputs (But no S-Video oddly) and I thought it'd be a fun throwback to run Kodi on a CRT like I did when it was XBMC on a CRT in the mid 2000s. I've had no problem finding HDMI to composite adapters that will just take whatever in and cram it into 480i composite but I'm having trouble finding something that will do the some for component. All the HDMI to Component adapters seem to maintain resolution, that is they convert to 1080p. 1080i, 720p, 480p, all depending on what they are being fed. I really don't want to set the Windows PC running Kodi into 480i. I really want something I can just send 1024x768 or 1280x960 to and have it scale and do what it needs to give me a 480i component signal. Yes, I realize the Windows GUI will be kinda blurry in that situation.

the Roxio HD Pro supports HDMI input an HDMI output especially for Xbox 360 well Xbox councils. PlayStation 3 is the only Council that must use component cables unless you purchase a converter otherwise

okay I understand now and to answer your question yes you can connect your Xbox with component in an HDMI out. Roxio made a illustration with standard installations in mind but yes you can use your component cables going in & your HDMI out. all you would do is select in your settings is" HDMI" instead of component

I just started using a Retro Tink 2x-pro for converting my vidiot to hdmi output.

Ā RetroTINK Home | RetroTINK LLCRetroTINK helps connect retro consoles to modern displays and more. Our line of products converts legacy video formats with high quality and minimal visual distortion for the most authentic experience.

Decided to try another solution and ended up with something that is working for me thus far, a Blackmagic HDMI to SDI micro converter paired with an AJA HD10MD3. The AJA box outputs component or composite and will crop or letterbox. Bought those both on Ebay and I think it was a little more than $80 total, incl. all taxes and shipping (had to wait a bit to find decent deals on each).

VGA is the only analog video connector in common use. An analog video signal is typically sent in three components: red, green, and blue (RGB). The color information is sent as a fluctuating electrical current, and the image quality can be degraded if the signal gets disrupted in some way, such as by interference. This is why with analog cables, the quality of the cable can actually affect the quality of the signal. In analog video cables, the information being transmitted corresponds to actual light values for the monitor to show.

HDMI and DVI are the same as far as video is concerned. You can switch between them with a $2 adapter. Both of these are digital formats. VGA and component are analog formats. While this is fine for driving a CRT, there is a definite quality loss when connecting to an LCD, since there is a conversion from digital in the video card to analog on the cable, and back to digital at the LCD.

Thanks for the reply! I left out some info on my original post, but my RNG 150 is for my second TV in my media room setup - it works great for channel surfing on a second set while my X1 DVR is my main set - but the 150 is old enough that it DOES have component outs. My Arris X1 DVR does NOT. So I used it to see what the component out looked like. But it was NOT as good as my In-Laws'. I realize picture quality is subjective but trust me - his old gear looks incredible using component compared to my 150 with component or my Arris with HDMI. Everyone says HDMI is better but there is something about their setup that looks awesome compared to mine! I've checked ALL TV and cable box settings but no luck! Just wondering if any experts have any theories. Thanks for any replies!!

I am embarrased to admit, but it had nothing to do with the component connect. After seeing the consensus that HDMI will always be better, I re-dug into my settings and found that having the Samsung TV picture on DYNAMIC, (along with sharpness high and backlight & brightness in just the right place,) the image really "jumps" out at you! I know that I tried every combination of settings when I first setup the TV, but the dynamic image will look great on only certain channels so I must have missed it at first. Sorry for the error and thanks for the replies!

Hardly any recently-designed set top boxes provide component cables these days. Aside from the extra cost for something rarely needed, content owners really want to lock things down to the content protection scheme that HDMI provides or scale back the resolution with composite output.

Being an STF it has no rf so that was always an issue. Back a number of years ago I got a hold of a box from Sal Esquivel that pushed the STF to component. Well, this box was extremely picky on what TVs it would work on. I ended up getting a smaller Sharp television that worked with it but then I read that that box may have been causing damage to the ST itself.Ā

Yeah I fooled with all the settings on the ossc and the tv and it never really cleared up. I am sure it is an easy fix but I foresee very few time I need to pop into hi res I can pull out my straight vga to hdmi cable. That seems to work pretty well for hi res.

I have the official component cables and these allow you to play with the best image quality (the Wii can only output 480p max). I have got one of those off brand hdmi adapters and while it works, the colour is all off (it is too dark to read text on Legend of Zelda on the virtual console).

Unlike the GameCube, where the digital output allows for lossless conversion - albeit with rather expensive hardware - the component output is the best that the Wii has. If you can hook that straight up to your TV, use it.

Installing the splitter is straight-forward. You connect the DirecTV box to the splitter and the splitter to your TV, via HDMI. Then you connect the Slingbox to the splitter using a component cable. The device requires USB-power, but as luck would have it, the DirecTV box sports a USB jack that worked fine.

Thanks for the information about the HDMI splitter. I doubt, however, that this will allow you to stream 4k resolution video from any Slingbox through the Gang Hu splitter. The reason is that the 2 Gang Hu units which I use do both have a limitation requiring me to reduce the resolution of the input stream to the Gang Hu to 1080i/720p. Any higher resolution does not produce an output component stream. I have tested this by feeding the component output to a component input on one of my TV sets.

Yes it will. This is the way I tested out the Gang-Hu splitter and found out that it does not support resolutions beyond 1080i through the Slingbox. While I was getting a good picture on my TV from the component out the Slingbox did not produce a picture until I set the output resolution on the Scart to 1080i.

I'm using a EVM365 board and am trying to test video compression. As the EVM board can get only component video (720P), I'm using a laptop with HDMI output as a video source (playing a 720P video), The other side of the HDMI cable is hooked to a HDMI-COMPONENT video converter which feeds the EVM board.

All this is very nice except it doesn't work. The encode utility can't run as it says that the video resolution is not recognized (it's looking for an exact resolution which is one of a default list or is capable of being divided to 16 with no remainder). My idea of using a lapto was in order to get a tool which is easy to change resolutions and/or video parameters thus checking the EVM software & hardware robustness and compression/decompression quality. be457b7860
