Conducted to address the frequent contamination issues that hinder the successful development of these embryos, the research aims to identify specific bacterial species present at each stage of the culture process. By understanding the contamination patterns, the study seeks to refine sterilization and handling techniques, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and yield of Makapuno embryo cultures. This is particularly important due to the high economic value and unique characteristics of Makapuno coconuts, which are highly prized in the market.

Effects of Indigenous Phosphate Solubulizing Rhizobacteria on the Growth Traits and Phosphorous Uptake of Robusta Coffee (Coffea robusta) Seedlings under Nursery Conditions

DESCRIPTION:

Coffee production in the Philippines faces a challenge: low production, which leads to a heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers to boost crop production; it is known to cause long-term harm to the environment as well as to the plant's and soil's health. This study explored the potential of indigenous phosphate-solubilizing rhizobacteria (PSRB) as a sustainable alternative to enhance coffee seedling growth and phosphorus uptake. Seven PSRB were isolated from the rhizosphere of Coffea robusta L. and Coffea liberica, and two potent isolates, Enterobacter lignolyticus and Enterobacter cloacae, were identified as promising biofertilizer candidates due to their exceptional ability to solubilize phosphate, exhibit biocontrol activity, and tolerate various abiotic stresses. Field trials showed that these PSRB improved coffee seedling growth traits, phosphorus uptake, and soil physicochemical characteristics compared to uninoculated groups. The study suggests that these Enterobacter species hold enormous potential for improving coffee production while minimizing environmental impact.

Characterization and Identification of Non-Fastidous Bacteria from Naturally Fermenting Cacao

This study focuses on the isolation and identification of non-fastidious bacteria found in different days of natural cocoa bean fermentation. The isolates were characterized morphologically and physiologically using series of biochemical tests. The 44 isolates were identified to belong in 10 genera namely: Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Providencia, Yersinia, Corynebacterium, Shigella, Enterococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Lactobacillus.

Screening of Halophilic Bacteria from Solar Evaporated Salt for the Production of Industrially-Important Enzymes

DESCRIPTION:

This study dealt with the isolation and screening of halophilic bacteria for the production of industrially-important enzymes. Based on the results, the solar-evaporated salts from Cavite and Pangasinan harbored Gram-positive halophilic bacteria. The majority of the isolates produced protease, but none exhibited amylase, cellulase, and lipase production. The two best isolates, identified as Virgibacillus massiliensis and Oceanobacillus kimchii, can produce protease and exhibit maximum protease activity, which grow best at pH9, 30°C, and 0% NaCl and pH 10, 37°C, and 5% NaCl, respectively.

Over the years, resistibility of several fungal pathogens increase as well as the demand for effective unusual antifungal medications.This study focused in the assessment of antifungal property of Pistia stratiotes leaf extract against Candida tropicalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This study main aim is to explore the potential of Pistia stratiotes leaf extracts as an antifungal agent. The methanolic and ethanolic leaf extract of Pistia stratiotes showed less effectivity against Candida tropicalis. While the methanolic and ethanolic leaf extract against Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed no effectivity at all. Generally, the methanolic and ethanolic leaf extracts of Pistia straiotes cannot be used as an antifungal agent against Candida tropicalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, because of their weak antifungal activity.

Substantial amounts of agricultural wastes, such as cacao pod husks (CPHs) and coffee husks (CHs), are generated during crop production which can cause environmental problems if not managed properly. This rising concern has attracted researchers to explore a more sustainable solution for waste management while mitigating another problem in the agricultural sector which is the emergence of fungicide-resistant phytopathogens. This study mainly focused on utilizing these wastes by evaluating their antifungal properties as a potential botanical control agent against phytopathogenic fungi.

Tomato plants are very vulnerable to stress-induced diseases and pathogenic microorganisms, that is why the use of fertilizers are heavily required. However extensive use of these agrochemicals may harm the environment and the soil fertility, and as the world population continues to increase, the need for more effort and innovation in sustainable agricuture is urgently needed. This study is in support to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” (SDG2) and the documentation of the potential use of Bacillus spp. as growth enhancers and biological control agents in tomato production under certain conditions must be conducted. Hence, this study may provide a baseline information on how tomato will perform in terms of its growth with the influence of Bacillus spp. strains. The information that will be collected from the study may become significant in tomato farming either on a large-scale planting or at home gardening since microbial inoculants are known to have the potential to be an alternative to chemical fertilization in improving crop production.

Detection and Characterization of Salmonella sp. From Raw Meat Products of Selected Wet Markets in Cavite

DESCRIPTION:

Meat products are a common part of the human diet, providing a source of protein, vitamins, etc. However, it is important to note that meat is also a potential source of food-borne illness caused by microorganisms such as Salmonella. Salmonella was found to be the biggest cause of food-borne illness in both people and animals. Several cases of Salmonella infections was reported worldwide and in the Philippines, but there is no study conducted in Cavite regarding detection of Salmonella species from meat products in public wet markets. Thus, this study was conducted to detect and characterize Salmonella sp. from raw meat products of selected wet markets in Cavite based on their morphological and biochemical characteristics, as well to confirm its identity using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification.

The study is driven by the recognition of agricultural waste as a significant issue and the unique potential of fungi to address this challenge. It explores the isolation, screening, characterization, and identification of ligninolytic microfungi from agricultural farms in Cavite, aiming to understand their role in environmental biodegradation, particularly in breaking down lignin, a complex component of plant cell walls. Microfungi were isolated using Lignin Agar and screened qualitatively using methyl orange and sugarcane bagasse plate assays. Enzymatic activity was quantified with a UV-vis spectrophotometer.

This study focuses on characterizing and isolating PSRB in the coffee rhizosphere, screening their tolerance to abiotic stresses, and examining their biocontrol activities, aiming to provide insights into their potential to support sustainable coffee farming. The PSRB isolates show strong phosphate solubilization capabilities and biocontrol activities, especially Enterobacter lignolyticus and Enterobacter cloacae (PL4 and PL5, respectively). As a result, they are promising candidates to improve nutrient availability and reduce environmental impacts in coffee cultivation and larger agricultural settings. Their ability to withstand abiotic stresses underscores their potential to promote sustainable agricultural practices, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers.

Mycoparasitism Activity of FIlamentous Fungi From Soil Against Fusarium oxysporum

This study focused on determining the mycoparasitism activity of filamentous soil fungi isolates that was obtained from the soil samples collected from different banana plantations against F. oxysporum. 13 out of 30 isolates identified as Aspergillus spp., Exserohilum spp., Penicillium spp., Acremonium spp., and Talaromyces spp. exhibited mycoparasitism activity based on dual culture assay and agar plate assisted slide culture technique.

The study focused on detecting coliforms and determining their antibiotic-resistance profiles in deep wells in Sitio Postema, Brgy. Sahud-Ulan, Tanza, Cavite, to address public health concerns and water quality.The study conducted from April to June 2024 analyzed water samples from five deep wells for coliforms and their antibiotic resistance profiles. Results showed that despite the water's generally acceptable physico-chemical quality, 2 deep wells out of 5 had the highest coliform counts, with isolates including E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, and Yersinia displaying significant antibiotic resistance.

The goal was to find effective fungal strains that could be utilized in pest management strategies to reduce insect infestations and reliance on chemical pesticides. The study is generally aimed to isolate fungi from soil, determine the pathogenicity of these fungal isolates against Tenebrio molitor larvae, to phenotipically and microscopically characterize the EPF isolates, and to molecularly identify the most promising EPF isolates.
