Hayden Kline is an emerging film composer from Brooklyn, New York. As a composer, he is strongly influenced by the psychology of music and how it influences behavior, and uses these effects to guide the scores he creates. He began his interest in composing with an early fascination with Beethoven (which he pronounced “Bay-ta-ta”) and other early Romantic composers. At the age of twelve, he taught himself the bass and the program Garageband, which he used to concoct instrumental pieces in his spare time. He began by writing instrumental guitar-based rock, but the allure of a more classical pallet enticed him to attempt bigger, bolder, and more complicated pieces.
In high school, his love of composing finally met the screen. With other talented video collaborators, including directors, actors, and one very gifted VFX artist, he would go on to create movies first as a creative answer to projects, and then for the fun of the craft. It was there his admiration for screen music and its power to tell stories began to blossom.
At Yale University, his interest in musical storytelling would only grow. He joined singing groups, classical ensembles, and theatrical productions in order to learn and practice what music had to offer. In theater, he found the variety of work overwhelming, and found jobs as a musical director, an instrumentalist, an actor, and a composer. Taking a year off from his studies, he joined the Whiffenpoofs and performed with them around the world[J3] .He also composed for them, conducted them, and helped produce their 2017 album.[J4] After a year abroad, he returned to school with newfound determination for approaching musical storytelling. He graduated with two bachelor’s degrees, one in music and only in political science. He has since pursued academic studies, and he currently attends New York University’s Screen Scoring division of the Steinhardt School, and aims to graduate in 2020.
