Student Recitals
HMTL Student Recitals
HMTL student recitals are semi-formal recitals held on Saturday mornings at a predetermined location (or virtually.) Three or four recitals are scheduled throughout the year and are open to any student prepared to perform a solo or ensemble. Students of all ages may participate. Solos should be memorized. Instrumentalists other than piano, performers of ensembles, and performers of hymns may use their music.

HMTL Student Recital Guidelines and Dress Code
The number of recitals scheduled will be adjusted to accommodate the total number of entries. Generally three or four recitals will be scheduled on the recital day as needed. Recital times are 9:00, 9:45, 10:30, and 11:15 a.m. Teacher preference will be considered. However, 9:45 and 10:30 are the preferred times for occasions with two recitals, with 9:45 preferred for only one recital. Requests for times will be honored when possible but are not guaranteed.
HMTL student recitals should be programmed NOT TO EXCEED A DURATION OF 30 MINUTES MAXIMUM on each recital whenever there are enough students participating to make 2 or 3 recitals necessary.
Whenever there are less than about 12-14 TOTAL recital entries submitted online and we only need to hold 1 recital, the maximum duration of the pieces programmed could add up to 35-40’.
Teachers must be required to time their students' pieces/movements and submit accurate timings on their online entry form by the deadline.
The recital chair will try to use the following guidelines for scheduling a teacher’s students:
A teacher may expect up to 4 students to be included in 1 recital.
A teacher may expect up to 10 students to be scheduled in 2 recitals.
Any year when the student recital participation is great, a teacher may place up to one-third of his/her class or 15 minutes of performance time on any Saturday recitals.
Performances should be limited to 5 minutes, unless a student is performing advanced repertoire. In the latter case, the student should be limited to 10 minutes. If a student is preparing for a competition, recital, or other event, longer length may be discussed with the recital chair.
Deadlines for recital entries will be strictly enforced. Dates for entry deadlines and recitals are included in the HMTL Calendar of Events. No phone calls will be accepted. Entries can be e-mailed to the recital chair and should contain all information requested on the Recital Entry Form. Please rehearse your students in the following stage deportment:
Walk to the piano and be seated.
Place the hands in the lap and prepare mentally for the performance.
Play the selection.
Return hands to the lap.
Stand, smile, and bow.
Return to your seat.
Proper recital etiquette must be followed. Student recitals in the past have been troubled with many disruptions. It is important for you, as a teacher, to enforce these rules as they are basic good manners when attending a public performance of any type. These apply to everyone involved – the audience as well as the performer.
Do not be late. It is preferable to be 10-15 minutes early.
Do not enter the recital hall during a performance.
Gum, food, and drinks are not allowed.
Disruptive persons will be asked to leave.
Everyone is expected to stay until the END of the recital.
Dress Code
Teachers are responsible for communicating proper dress to their students and parents for each event they enter. Any questions regarding the dress code should be discussed with the event chair prior to the event.
